The Region Safety Coordinator is responsible for supporting the daily safety needs of the DOT Aberdeen & Mitchell Regions. This position will spend the majority of their time in the field, working closely and in collaboration with staff to ensure that SDDOT operations are occurring in the safest manner possible. The Region Safety Coordinator will drive to field sites to observe work practices and ensure SDDOT safety procedures are followed. This position will inspect work areas to ensure working conditions are in compliance with industry best practices.
Additionally, the Region Safety Coordinator is responsible for conducting and/or coordinating safety training for job skills within the Aberdeen and Mitchell Regions. This position will conduct employee training sessions on safety policies, best practices, or other relevant safety topics.
The Region Safety Coordinator will assist with investigations of incidents and accidents to determine the root cause and to develop methods and procedures to prevent future incidents. This requires gathering and reviewing documented information to ensure compliance with internal procedures and state and federal regulations. Reviews and analyzes incident and accident reports to identify trends and lessons learned, the need for initial or refresher training, or other proactive/preventive measures.
The Region Safety Coordinator will attend and take an active role in monthly safety meetings for the DOT Aberdeen and Mitchell Regions. This position will work collaboratively with the DOT Safety Manager and fellow safety team members on organization-wide safety issues and objectives. The Region Safety Coordinator for the DOT Aberdeen & Mitchell Regions will work with the Region Safety Coordinator for the DOT Pierre & Rapid City Regions, to assist the SDDOT Safety Manager in developing, updating, and implementing safety policies and procedures.
This position reports directly to the SDDOT Safety Manager.
Position requires occasional driving among SDDOT and other SD agency offices and facilities using either a personal or SDDOT vehicle on a regular basis. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and satisfactory driving record.

The total compensation of Hourly Wage State/Federal Benefits for a typical year for entry level Region Safety Coordinator is approximately $81,731.00 annually.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Associate degree in Occupational Safety, the Sciences, or related field.
- Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST), or
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or
- General Industry OSHA 30-hr certifications (Course 511), or
- Construction Industry OSHA 30-hr certifications (Course 510) successfully completed within the last three years preferred.
- Experience in the operation, use, and maintenance of heavy equipment, construction equipment, and/or snow plows.

Ability to:
- communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing;
- communicate with all levels of department staff.
