The warden serves as a leader and has full responsibility for a level V multi-custody correctional facility and a minimum security (Level II) facility. This includes performing advanced managerial work in a correctional facility. The work involves managing and overseeing a correctional facility; administering policies and procedures of the agency; directing security, housing and facility operations; and supervising the work of others. This position works under minimal direct supervision and has a considerable amount of latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. The position understands budgetary allocations and ensures their facility operates within budget. The warden position is also responsible for collaboration with local community volunteers and to uphold the vision and mission of the South Dakota Department of Corrections. This position reports to the Deputy Director of Prisons for the Department of Corrections (DOC). Extensive employment and criminal background checks will be conducted on candidates prior to selection.

Duties include:

  • overseeing the administration of programs, including security, treatment, budget, education, to ensure safe, efficient, and lawful functioning.
  • planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating new department initiatives and projects.
  • administering policies and procedures. Strong skills in locating codified law and resources necessary for corrections law.
  • developing working relationships with a variety of governmental officials, law enforcement agencies, community partners, and citizen groups.
  • setting financial goals for the prison and managing the budget.
  • monitoring the success of current activities and continually seeking to improve them, basing changes on the strategic planning, industry best practices, legislation, and research.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, sociology, or a related field, and at least 10 years of experience in corrections or law enforcement administration is preferred.
