South Dakota State University’s School of Health and Consumer Sciences is offering an exciting career opportunity as an Instructor of Aviation Education. We are looking for a creative and innovative professional to join us in the Aviation Program beginning August 2025. This is a 9-month, 100% time, benefit eligible position. This position is supervised by the Director of School of Health and Consumer Sciences.
The School of Health and Consumer Sciences (HCS) consists of undergraduate and graduate programs in Athletic Training, Community and Public Health, Exercise Science, Physical Education Teacher Education, Sports and Recreation Management, Nutrition and Dietetics, Fashion Studies and Apparel Merchandising, Hospitality, Events and Tourism Management, Aviation Education, and Leadership and Management of Non-profit Organizations. The school serves approximately 1,000 undergraduate and 120 graduate majors.
The Aviation program at SDSU is an integral part of HCS in the College of Education and Human Sciences. The ABBI-accredited program consists of approximately 200 undergraduate students, and three full-time faculty and seven full-time staff to support the aviation education. Over the past few years, the program has built a positive reputation across the region for professionally-focused aviation students.

RESPONSIBILITIES This faculty will teach aviation related courses with assignments through the various academic levels and modalities (in person, online, hybrid) offered in the aviation program. The faculty will also serve as the safety coordinator, working closely with the director of flight operations to ensure all safety protocols are maintained and implemented. The faculty will also be responsible to serve on committees at the college, school, and program levels as well as provide service to the profession, the industry, and the region. As a mid-sized aviation program, the person in this position will work closely with other aviation faculty to develop curriculum and guide the scope of the program. This position also allows a qualified candidate to explore many aspects of an accredited collegiate aviation program outside of just teaching and curriculum development through engaging in assessment and accreditation efforts, student recruitment and retention, and other duties as assigned by the Director.
SALARY : The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications, starting at $72,000. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines. - Master’s Degree completed by first day of employment.
- Current, or ability to obtain, FAA Flight Instructor Certification.
- Teaching, aviation, or industry experience related to curriculum.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
