The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at South Dakota Mines is seeking to fill a tenure track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level related to Geotechnical Engineering. The desired start date for the position is August 2025.

The department and campus have expertise in geotechnical materials, saturated and unsaturated soil testing, numerical modeling, and remote sensing and geomatics. This position will complement the current areas of strength using a breadth of geotechnical expertise and depth of knowledge to work effectively on and eventually lead transdisciplinary research teams.

Responsibilities :

  • Establish a strong externally funded research program
  • Contribute to the CEE PhD program
  • Teach courses related to geotechnical engineering, and potentially transportation engineering, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as other fundamental civil engineering courses
  • Participate in service-related activities

Required Qualifications :

  • An earned doctorate in Civil Engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Expertise in geotechnical engineering associated with ground improvement, slope stability, foundation design, bio-geotechnics, geo-environmental, or other related topics
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience in transportation topics such as pavement materials and / or highway design is beneficial.
  • Experience in industry or government as a practicing engineer is also beneficial.
