Job Description
TITLE: High School Assistant Principal
REPORTS TO: High School Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Commonwealth of Pennsylvania PK-12 Principal’s Certification
- 5 or more years of building leadership experience, preferred
- 5 or more years as a high school educator, preferred
- 3.0 or higher QPA
- Proof of ongoing professional development or educational experience
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Computer literacy
JOB GOAL:
To develop and implement an educational program which meets the needs of all students enrolled at the high school and to create a caring, safe, positive learning environment; to collaborate with all stakeholder groups to create meaningful experiences for all students.
To collaborate and partner with the Building Principal on supporting and fostering a positive, safe, supportive, and inclusive environment for all students and staff.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Instruction and Assessment:
- Establishing goals and objectives for each school year
- Implementing the Department of Education regulations, district goals and policies, and objectives of South Fayette Township School District
- Supervising and evaluating professional staff members
- Creating a working environment that promotes and fosters positive staff morale and culture
- Meeting with department chairs to assess the needs, progress, and concerns related to each department
- Keeping staff informed of current educational trends
- Instructional leadership skills in Project Based Learning and innovative experiences
- Participate in the hiring process
- Insuring that the district curriculum is being followed in the classroom and that teachers are regularly and fairly assessing students
- Working to continually improve the achievement of all students
- Serve as the School Assessment Coordinator for standardized testing
- Meeting with the staff to interpret test results and implement strategies to use data effectively to improve achievement
Program Support
- Maintaining a presence in the building during the arrival and dismissal of students, during class changes, at lunchtime, and at other times throughout the day as time permits to provide a safe and orderly environment in the building
- Counseling and disciplining students whose behavior is disruptive to the classroom or violates school or district policies and procedures
- Working with the Dean of Students in regards to discipline, safety, and the well-being of students
- Conferencing with parents, teachers, and students regarding disciplinary actions
- Meeting with the Dean of Students yearly to update the Student-Parent Handbook
- Participating on the building teams that are related to programs (i.e. Student Assistance Team)
- Communicating the procedures for recommendations for referrals to the Student Assistance Team and other services available to students
- Serve as the LEA at IEP, GIEP and 504 conferences
- Overseeing the performance of substitute teachers
- Conduct school safety drills as required by State code
- Overseeing the eligibility of students who participate in extracurricular activities as prescribed in the Student-Parent Handbook
- Overseeing the overall operation of the building on a daily basis
- Maintaining a safe and secure facility for all staff and students
- Completing special projects and other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or the Superintendent
Leadership
- Employing a empathetic approach in decisions affecting staff, students, parents, and the community
- Maintaining an attitude of fairness and consistency in decisions affecting students and parents
- Assist in the planning, supervising, and directing of staff meetings
- Reacting promptly and effectively in crisis situations
- Demonstrating flexibility, dependability, ethical behavior, initiative, and creativity in decision-making
Fiscal and Budgetary Management
- Assisting with the identification and justification for monies to be spent in various categories of the budget each year
- Assisting and preparing the high school budget and monitoring expenditures throughout the school year
Home, School, and Community Relations
- Responding to parent inquiries via phone, e-mail, or mail in a prompt and timely manner
- Keeping parents informed of student attendance, classroom behavior, academic progress, and student achievement
- Keeping parents informed of school events and activities through regular communication (e-mail distribution lists, monthly newsletters, etc.)
- Representing the district at the affiliated Career & Technical Center’s monthly meetings
- Coordinating and/or developing all schedule changes and communications relative to students enrolled at the Career & Technical Center
- Assist with planning of commencement and its related activities
- Encouraging staff and students to develop a sense of pride and spirit for South Fayette High School
- Providing leadership in dealing with community needs, problems, and concerns regarding the school.
- Presenting a positive image of South Fayette High School when information is solicited by the media
- Representing South Fayette at various evenings, weekends and out of state trips and activities
Recordkeeping
- Overseeing the supervision and documentation of students involved in programs and/or other programs as outlined by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, or Building Principal
Professional Responsibilities
- Demonstrating computer literacy by providing all correspondence and written documentation using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel/Access) and Google Education Suite
- Demonstrating computer literacy in using the administrative software program effectively to maintain and retrieve student information, grading, and attendance data and to maintain student grades and performance assessments
- Checking and responding to e-mail and voice mail daily
- Maintaining professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and in self-selected professional growth activities
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, or Building Principal
TERMS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Term of employment is 12 months and is in accordance with the Act 93 Agreement between administrators and the South Fayette Township School District.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Building Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and Superintendent.
