JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Substitute Mechanic
Reports To: Director of Transportation and Chief Mechanic
Qualifications:
- Certification from approved Technical training program or equivalent practical experience as bus, truck, or heavy equipment mechanic.
- Complete physical prior to employment
- Maintain a valid Pa. bus drivers license
- A class “B” CDL with a “S”, “A”, and “P” endorsement
- Ability to communicate in a direct and courteous manner
- A.S.E. certified Diesel Mechanic or able to attain certification
- Have a valid PA State Mechanic Inspection License is preferred
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Head Mechanic in repair of District owned vehicles
- Perform inventory checks as assigned by the Head Mechanic such as (a) check tires (b) check fuel levels in tanks (c) maintaining a parts inventory, etc.
- Maintain a School Bus Operator’s license
- Assist the Chief Mechanic in transportation related areas as requested
- Ensure that all vehicles meet State and Federal guidelines pertaining to safety and operation of school buses
- Complete all records and reports pertaining to maintenance and safety of buses
- Maintain an accurate list of the vehicle inspection schedule, prepare vehicles for inspection, and transport vehicles to a third party for inspection when necessary
- knowledgeable with gas welding, burning and electric welding
- Able to perform body work, such as repairing and replacing body parts, painting of regular enamels and clear coats
- Able to troubleshoot electrical problems on all school vehicles
- Knowledgeable on all types of diesel engines
- Promote safety in the bus garage
- Snow removal when needed
- Maintain records of all maintenance and repair work
- Make roadside repairs as required
- Assist in cleaning and organization of the bus garage, parts area, and other maintenance facilities
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Any additional duties assigned related to your position by the district
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to;
- The employee must be able to stand; walk; use hand and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands or arms.
- The employee is occasionally required to sit.
- The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward.
- The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools.
- The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as bus parts.
- Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 pounds.
- The employee will sometimes push/pull items.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Terms of Employment
Rate-$25.21/hour. This Substitute is anticipated to be needed through the end of June 2025.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Services Personnel.
