What are the responsibilities and job description for the Secondary School Counselor position at South Hamilton Community School District?
Purpose: Provide a comprehensive school counseling program and support our students in the areas of academic achievement, college and career planning, and personal and social development. The school counselor will also serve as a consultant to families and community partners.
Reports to: Secondary Principal
Educational Requirements:
- Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in school guidance and counseling with an Iowa license or the desire to gain a degree in guidance and eventually obtain an Iowa license.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborates on the development and management of the comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic planning and social, emotional, and behavioral health.
- Provides the classroom guidance sessions aligned with the counseling competencies in the areas of academic achievement, career and educational development, and personal and social development to assist students in developing skills and identifying life goals.
- Provides preventative and responsive services to students by initiating individual and small groups for students’ academic, social, and personal concerns.
- Lead the development and maintenance of the district plan that outlines the implementation of the career and academic planning process per Iowa Code.
- Guides students in preparing and updating 4-year academic plans. Communicates the plans with parents and files them in student cumulative folders per Iowa Code.
- Assists students in college and career exploration by hosting career fairs, organizing college and workplace visits, and extending students’ access and knowledge to postsecondary college and career options.
- Assists students with the college application process by providing test preparation, assisting students to schedule testing, hosting FAFSA help sessions, and other services.
- Develops student and staff class schedules and updates course registration materials in collaboration with the principal.
- Codes courses with accuracy and attention to detail on Infinite Campus software for state reporting.
- Creates and maintains accurate student records including transcripts.
- Serves as the liaison between the school and colleges by providing transcripts and assisting students to enroll in PSEO and concurrent enrollment courses.
- Works collaboratively with the building principal to address attendance concerns and develop attendance improvement plans.
- Assists the building principal in planning and providing behavior supports and interventions in collaboration with other staff.
- Creates opportunities to celebrate student success and create a positive school culture.
- Assists students in locating and applying for available scholarships.
- Plans and coordinates senior awards night and the graduation ceremony.
- Serves on school and district teams that support district goals and the well-being of students.
- Provides leadership as the 504 Coordinator for the building and works collaboratively with teams to develop, monitor, maintain, and update 504 plans.
- Provides in-service training in guidance for teachers and district staff.
- Assesses student needs and makes referrals to appropriate school resource personnel, social agencies, community agencies and alternative programs. Serves as liaison between various social services agencies.
- Assists families in obtaining services for their children.
- Intervenes during crisis situations.
- Maintains confidentiality and upholds ASCA ethical and professional standards.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Job Type: Contract
Pay: $50,000.00 - $75,480.00 per year
