What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at South Haven Animal Hospital?
Our fast paced practice, located in South Haven, a resort community in SW Michigan is seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant.
We are looking for a compassionate Veterinary Assistant to support our Veterinarian and team in providing excellent care for our patients.
We are an energetic, fun loving and cohesive team. Our hospital and our entire staff pride themselves on providing the best medical care and compassion for our patients and their families. The right candidate must possess a passion for veterinary medicine, be hardworking, have excellent communication skills and be able to take directions from multiple sources.
Our new team member will be supporting our Doctor, technician and front office staff. S/he must be able to create and maintain a positive, low stress and comforting atmosphere for our patients and clients.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
* Maintaining medical records,
* Preparing surgical suite for patients and for surgery,
* Filling prescriptions,
* Restraining patients (animals),
* Be able to understand and respond to all types of animal communication and function at a high level with background noises (voices of other staff members and medical equipment),
* Providing compassionate care for all patients including those who are hospitalized and never forget that they are somebody’s family members,
* Keeping the examination areas, (as well as public areas of the hospital), clean and ready for patients,
*Making independent, common sense decisions and actions and possess the ability to solve complex problems by oneself,
* Engage in positive and effective client communication, (occasionally client education may be required),
* Front desk duties including but not limited to;
- Answering and managing the use of a multi-line phone system. This requires the ability to prioritize, be cheerful and have excellent verbal communication skills,
- Schedule appointments,
- Check in patients,
- Collect payments and review discharge paperwork (and instructions) with clients,
* Preform multiple tasks quickly in a fast paced environment,
* Be willing and able to take directions and communicate with other staff members in all positions in the office- Doctor, technicians other veterinary assistants and front office staff.

This position will require the ability to work weekdays, evenings and some Saturdays. This position is 30 - 40 hours per week depending on the ability of the successful candidate.
