Dean of Students
Purpose Statement
The job of Dean of Students is done for the purpose/s of collaborating with the principal to provide quality professional development, interventions and data collection and disciplinary interventions using Discovery Program.
This job reports to the Principal
Essential Functions
- Cooperates with building and district central office staff for the purpose of maintaining a good working relationship.
- Counsels students for the purpose of building on the childrens individual strengths and offering them the maximum opportunity to participate in the planning and direction of their own learning experiences.
- Facilitates communication between parents and students who receive four redirects for discipline for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems and/or resolving conflicts.
- Intervenes in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for the purpose of assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
- Maintains confidentiality of information concerning colleagues, students and parents for the purpose of protecting private information and maintaining a good relationship with people and students working with the program.
- Maintains data related to discipline, school culture and social interactions for the purpose of monitoring the effectiveness of the Discovery Program implementation.
- Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. student contracts, student discipline records, correspondence, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
- Presents information (e.g. mediation, conflict resolution, discovery skills, discipline, school culture, social interactions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information and monitoring the effectiveness of the Discovery Program implementation.
- Reviews and processes problem solving contracts of students who have received discipline consequences for the purpose of determining what should take occur next.
- Serves as a liaison with school personnel, parents and community members for the purpose of addressing the needs of students.
- Supports acquisition of Discovery skills with students and staff for the purpose of answering questions and providing information.
- Trains staff and personnel for the purpose of teaching them to use mediation and conflict-resolution strategies to resolve childrens social, behavioral and educational problems.
- Works with Discovery consultants for the purpose of improving skills and planning and delivering professional development.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: planning and managing projects; using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and administering discipline policies.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; conflict resolution.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 30% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.
Experience Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
Education Bachelors degree in job-related area.
