Salary range is pending final budget approval $113,664 - $135,830 depending on experience

Summary:  The High School Assistant Principal assists the building principal in organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff and families. The Assistant Principal works closely with the building principal to implement an instructional vision and focused plan for improving student achievement while narrowing the disparities between the highest and lowest performing students; supervise and support professional educators in strengthening their instructional practices; create a community of continuous learning for all staff and students; foster a culture of high expectation, providing all students with equitable access to high quality and culturally relevant instruction; build strong partnerships with families and community; create a safe, welcoming environment that reflects and supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and communities served. The Assistant Principal acts in the capacity of the principal during the principal’s absence from the school.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Administrative/Organizational

  • Work closely with the school principal to increase parental involvement, strengthen school to home communications and leverage community partnerships to improve student outcomes.
  • Ensures effective community-staff-student relations by promoting communication and participation, by identifying needs and planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the school-community relations activities in a manner which is visible to the public. Promotes parental and community involvement in school and District activities.
  • Promote a positive, safe and caring climate for learning that supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and communities served.
  • Represent the school in a variety of settings (e.g. community forums, parent-teacher organizations, etc.) for maintaining ongoing community support for educational goals and assisting with issues related to school environment.
  • Respond to inquiries from a wide variety of stakeholders (e.g. principal, parents, students, staff, etc.) for identifying relevant issues and recommending or implementing action plans.
  • Supervise school personnel for monitoring performance, providing for professional growth, and achieving overall objectives of school's curriculum.
  • Support principal in a variety of ways (e.g. policy implementation, meeting facilitation, etc.) for ensuring the smooth operation of administration.
  • Chair a wide variety of meetings (e.g. curriculum, safety, site council, faculty, etc.) for coordinating activities and ensuring that outcomes meet school, District, and state goals, policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement policies, procedures, and directives for providing direction and complying with mandated requirements.
  • Intervene in occurrences of inappropriate behavior of students for assisting students in modifying such behavior and developing successful interpersonal skills.
  • Prepare a wide variety of information (e.g. quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, etc.) for documenting activities, providing written reference, and conveying information.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Personnel Management

  • Assists with hiring of licensed and classified staff and supports the evaluation of assigned licensed and classified staff.
  • Evaluates assigned personnel, for the purpose of supporting high standards of teaching and learning.
  • Provide training and in-services to staff and families.

Leadership-Overall

  • Assists in implementing instructional strategies, school-wide communication and student behavior supports, including supporting the needs of diverse learners, delivery methods, assessment, and staff development for improvement of instruction.
  • Assists with student orientation; discipline; student recognition; data collection and securing student services with outside agencies.
  • Models the characteristics of effective leadership including energy, integrity, high-level communication skills, etc.
  • Communicates effectively and works cooperatively with all stakeholders using excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Attends meetings and participates on committees as requested.
  • Provide leadership and a visible presence at school and community events.

Supervisory Responsibilities:         

  • All employees of the Medford School District have responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.
  • Supervises staff as assigned.
  • Supervise after school/evening events as assigned.

Education and Experience: 

  • Previous successful teaching experience required.
  • Experience working with high school students.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Must be eligible for or properly licensed by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission for assignment as an administrator.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license required.

Interpersonal Skills:  Ability to interact appropriately with teachers, staff, members of the community and students. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; Contributes to building a positive team spirit.

Language Skills:  Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing. Preference may be given to applicants who are fluent in both English and Spanish. Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small and large group situations to students and other school staff.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and area.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, geometry, fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:  General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e-mail, internet software, spreadsheets, teaching software and word processing software.
