Job Title: Media Center Assistant

Summary: Assists Media Specialist in managing a library collection and performs various media center and computer lab clerical and paraprofessional duties, including working with groups of students in developing media skills and assisting with computer lab needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Installs computer software and performs simple software maintenance using appropriate system utilities.
- Prepares work orders and processes them appropriately.
- Cleans, sets up inventories, moves equipment, and discards old/broken equipment.
- Troubleshoots and performs appropriate network maintenance and minor device troubleshooting/repair.
- Orders requested software with approval.
- Works closely with NTS regarding technical issues related to the Media Center.
- Instructs staff and students on the proper use e of the software as directed.
- Communicates effectively with IMC concerning usage licenses.
- Supervise and assist students in the library and/or computer labs)
- Keeps current on new technology related to Media services.
- Works with the circulation management system of the media center.
- Re-shelves books and materials.
- Prepares material requisitions and processes work orders.
- Prepares books for circulation and makes book repairs.
- Organizes media center exhibits and displays and may coordinate or assist in setting up special events.
- Provides storytelling and book talks to classes, if requested.
- Inventories, repairs, stores, and manages payments for lost textbooks and devices.
- Checks materials out to staff and students before, during, and after school.
- Assist teachers with computer testing (i.e., TESA, STAR, and AR.)
- Uses budgeting process and internet to order books and materials as directed.
- Assists with audio-visual materials, equipment, and computer lab materials.
- Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
- Complies with all safety and work rules, policies and procedures.
- Responsible for proper utilization, operation, and maintenance of all department resources.
- Provides support to other positions as needed.
- Assumes additional responsibilities as appropriate with little or no supervision.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creates and decorates learning spaces.
- Provides support for special programs using library materials and computers.
- Inspects area for safety or health hazards and reports hazards promptly to the appropriate staff.
- Cleans and sanitizes furniture and equipment.
- Researches new authors and books.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Assists in directing the work of student and parent volunteers and building support working in the Media Center.
- All employees of the Medford School District supervise students and maintain a safe environment.

Education and/or Experience: Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or one to two years related responsible clerical experience and/or training involving public contact or equivalent combination of education and experience (including passage of paraprofessional test).
Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact appropriately with teachers, staff, community members, and students. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; Contributes to building a positive team spirit.
Language Skills: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing fluently in English. Preference may be given to applicants fluent in English and Spanish. Ability to effectively present information and respond verbally to common inquiries or complaints from students, school staff, and parents. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry concepts such as ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e-mail, internet software, inventory software, order processing software, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District, including current No Child Left Behind (NCLB) certification requirements.
