DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Shall coordinate the planning, organization, and maintenance of the guidance program for the school.
- One or more of the guidance staff shall assume the responsibility for scheduling and placement of students in a program of studies commensurate with their abilities, interests, and aptitude.
- Shall conduct individual counseling, small group counseling and large group developmental guidance sessions with students in areas of personality development, attitudes and appreciations, coping behaviors, emotional maturity, decision-making, developing realistic goals, job exploration, childhood and adolescent problems, self and social judgment, drug, and relationships.
- Shall refer students to specialists and work cooperatively with those agencies when referral procedures are deemed necessary.
- Shall be responsible for the purchase and maintenance of guidance materials for use by school personnel and students.
- Shall be responsible for maintaining and interpreting the school cumulative record system to teachers, parents, and students.
- Shall counsel with students to assist them in developing a better understanding of their educational strengths and weaknesses.
- Shall develop and conduct a testing program to assist pupils in under-standing their abilities, interests, and aptitudes.
- Shall provide teachers, parents, and school administrators with information about students as may be necessary to enable them to plan curricular and instructional programs appropriate to their educational needs.
- Shall comply with and provide leadership in the administration of all school building level policies and procedures.
- Shall meet professional obligations in the adherence of school building level philosophies.
- Shall upgrade professional skills as needed in order to be an effective guidance counselor.
- Shall meet all administrative obligations to students, colleagues, and administrators as scheduled or requested.
- Shall read and study as needed to stay abreast of new and changing subject matter needed for effective job performance.
- Shall be clean and neat and dressed in a professional manner.
- Shall use correct grammar in the written and spoken word while performing the tasks of a counselor.
- Shall respect the confidentiality of all school information.
- Shall work through the appropriate resources to recognize outstanding student achievement.
- Shall see that office is neat, orderly, and attractive for students.
- Shall devote time scheduled during the work day to the duties of being an effective guidance counselor.
- Shall perform all tasks as delegated by the building principal and keep the principal properly informed on school matters.
