job description: GROCERY WELLNESS ASSISTANT MANAGER
purpose: To select, purchase, price, and promote grocery and wellness department products as directed by the Grocery Wellness Department Manager. To support the Grocery Wellness Department Manager in meeting department objectives for sales, margin, inventory turns, labor, and customer service. To stock, receive, and promote present products in full, clean, & organized displays and supervise department staff in the Department Manager’s absence.

responsibilities:
PURCHASING
- Purchase items following product selection guidelines & marketing plan (e.g. priority for local, POC owned, organic) and Grocery Wellness Department Manager’s guidance.
- Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery.
- Support Grocery Manager in investigating new sources of supply; Suggest new suppliers to maximize sales potential.
- Purchase for special deals and promotions as determined by Grocery Wellness Department Manager.
- Ensure prices in POS are accurate, up-to-date and that prices are entered on uniform grocery and wellness department shelf tags and signs.
- Receive orders, or ensure proper receiving by other staff in accordance with established procedures.
- Coordinate with Receivers in handling returns and obtaining credit from suppliers for grocery and wellness products.
- Participate in inventory counts for designated product departments.
MERCHANDISING
- Attend periodic marketing meetings with other department managers and buyers to plan promotions and storewide merchandising.
- Assist in the pricing of products to achieve margin and sales goals, while maintaining a competitive image. Mark down items as needed to reduce losses.
- Build attractive displays. Build and maintain end-caps and other in-store displays, according to established standards for appearance, variety and ease of shopping and stocking.
- Uphold stocking priorities for department staff to ensure shelves/bins/coolers are fully stocked and rotated for freshness. Stock items as needed.
- Ensure displays are replenished using proper rotation methods and verifying all items are fresh and within date.
- Offer tastes, samples, suggestions for purchase and ways to prepare products.
- Provide product information to customers, staff, and newsletter.
- Visit other stores for price comparisons, product and merchandising ideas.
- Attend trainings, trade shows and co-op conferences as assigned.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Assist customers with product questions in prompt friendly courteous manner.
- Assist customers with special orders, and ensure orders are placed from appropriate vendors in a timely manner.
- Pass on relevant literature for co-op staff to read about grocery and wellness products.
DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE
- Ensure proper storage of items to be returned to suppliers. See that unsellable items are properly disposed of. Keep accurate shrinkage records.
- Ensure that grocery department shelves, displays, aisles and storage areas in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department & ADA standards.
- Remove trash promptly, sweep and mop retail area floors frequently.
- Mark down items as needed to reduce losses.
- Use equipment safely. Ensure maintenance of department equipment in working order. Monitor cooler temperatures. General Manager of equipment problems or needs.
STAFF TRAINING AND GUIDANCE--for grocery clerks:
- Deliver on-the-job training as directed.
- Provide feedback to Grocery Wellness Department Manager on performance of staff working in the department paying special attention to performance concerns that need to be addressed in a timely manner.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist customers in all departments, in prompt friendly courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
- Participate in development of operating and capital budgets and annual strategic planning for store.
- Participate in setting sales, margin, and labor goals for grocery and wellness departments.
- Review financial reports of department performance and support department manager in taking corrective action as needed.
- Attend Management Team meetings, storewide meetings. and other meetings as directed.
- Prepare reports as required by the Department Manager or General Manager.
- Answer and route phone calls, take and route messages as needed.
- Perform other tasks conveyed by the Department Manager or General Manager.
- Participate in hiring, evaluations, and training when requested.

QUALIFICATIONS
- At least one year of stocking and receiving for a department in a natural food store.
- Knowledge of current trends in natural foods industry.
- Several innovative ideas for merchandising at the co-op.
- Organized, consistently follows through on commitments.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands.
- Communication skills--clear directions, good listener.
- Experience serving the public.
- Ability to project friendly, outgoing personality.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Willingness to work one or more weekend days.
- Willingness to work one or more nights.
- Regular, predictable attendance.
- Willingness and ability to learn and grow to meet the changing requirements of the job.

Pay: $18.00 - $25.00 per hour
