Job Description
SUMMARY:
The Assistant Director of Development supports the Development and Advancement efforts of South Plains College in a variety of ways and has a special focus on engaging SPC alumni. The Assistant Director of Development is a disciplined, results-oriented self-starter who demonstrates initiative and creativity while appropriately managing confidential information. The Assistant Director of Development must also demonstrate flexibility as the duties for this position will evolve and change over time.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Work as an effective member of SPC teams including Development, Institutional Advancement, the College as a whole and the Levelland community.
In coordination with the Director of Development, work to ensure the success of annual fundraising and recognition events such as the Scholarship Gala, Scholarship Golf Scramble and Scholarship Banquet.
Encourage alumni support and participation in College fundraising, programs and events.
Generate awareness of and increase membership in the SPC Alumni Association as well as the Dual Alumni program with the Texas Tech Alumni Association.
Maintain and update database of alumni information to ensure database integrity.
Coordinate the annual Distinguished Alumni Award program which includes:
- organizing and convening the Recommendation Committee as needed
- managing the nominations process
- creating appropriate recognition
- facilitating relationship with nominees and acting as liaison
Coordinate alumni events, activities and programs which may include:
- conceptualization
- creation and dissemination of print materials, often with the Office of Marketing and Communications
- physical arrangements such as facilities, catering, and equipment
- program arrangements such as presenters
- tracking and evaluating participation
- follow-up such as bill payments and appropriate thanks
Effectively work within a budget.
Work collaboratively with the SPC Foundation.
Represent South Plains College at appropriate events.
Have flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and early mornings for events and meetings.
Possess computer literacy and/or a demonstrated ability to learn skills in areas such as:
- word processing and mail merges, excel spreadsheets and presentation media such as
PowerPoint
- internet and e-mail such as Constant Contact
- database software programs, such as Colleague, Perceptive Content and Greater Giving
- social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram
Demonstrate outstanding listening, analytical skills and emotional intelligence to be able to identify constituent interests and relate them to college priorities.
Utilize persuasive communication skills in writing, in person and over the telephone.
Maintain high professional standards and have an attitude of excellent customer service.
Exercise exceptional organization and decision-making skills with attention to detail and ability to follow-up.
In conjunction with the Office of Marketing and Communications, spearhead all public communication to alumni in a timely manner including all social media, the alumni page on the College website and monthly email newsletter.
The successful Assistant Director of Development will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks concurrently and performing effectively under stress associated with meeting strict deadlines.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in supervision of student assistant employees and volunteers.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree required.
Related experience and/or training beneficial.
Demonstrated knowledge of community colleges in general and South Plains College
specifically preferred.
COMPUTER SKILLS
Proficiency with Windows operating system and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) are required. Knowledge of database software and systems in a mainframe environment (e.g., Colleague/Advance) is required. Additional computer skills and proficiency related to business activities is recommended.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos. Ability to write correspondence utilizing email and traditional letters. Ability to communicate with individuals in a professional manner both in person and over the phone. Excellent writing skills including the ability to proofread and edit are preferred.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Demonstrated ability to work and collaborate with co-workers and visitors in a professional office setting and with volunteers in a variety of settings. Ability to maintain confidentiality of donor information and office operations is required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute basic statistics and to draw and interpret graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form.
