Job Description
The Instructor in Theatre is responsible for teaching college courses in Theatre to undergraduate students. This role includes a variety of duties and responsibilities as outlined below.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach freshman and sophomore theatre classes, including performance (acting, movement, diction) and technical theatre (lighting, makeup, set construction).
- Direct and produce three to four productions annually, including budgeting, design, and construction.
- Collaborate with music faculty on musical theatre productions.
- Teach Theatre Appreciation in various formats: in-person, online, and hybrid. This course fulfills the creative arts component of the core curriculum for non-majors.
- Deliver instruction through a variety of modalities, including traditional in-person classes, online platforms, video-based teaching, hybrid formats, and other emerging methods as necessitated by evolving educational demands.
- Prepare, administer, and grade examinations, including the creation and implementation of online courses.
- Maintain the theatre work, and storage areas, ensuring it is safe, orderly, and well-equipped for all productions and classes.
- Provide academic advisement to students and sponsor student organizations.
- Serve on faculty committees as needed.
- Commitment to building community across institution with programs, departments and schools and with local community.

Education and Experience
- A Master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in the teaching area is required.
- An MFA in Theatre Arts is preferred.
- Experience and training in both theatre and musical theatre are required.
Language Skills
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
- Consistent with instructional area.
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
