Summary
South San Francisco Scavenger Company is the local recycling, organics, and garbage collector for the cities of South San Francisco, Millbrae, and Brisbane, and the San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
We are hiring a Recycling Specialist to be responsible for auditing, training, supporting, and reporting the achievement of residential and commercial customers in our service area. The Recycling Specialist will work closely with other South San Francisco Scavenger Company staff to improve community participation in recycling and composting programs. The Specialist will support efforts to reduce waste and meet SB 1383 goals and other diversion mandates.
Primary Responsibilities
The Recycling Specialist is responsible for the following day-to-day duties:
- Assist with the education and training of customers to help reduce waste and improve waste sorting
- Review and adjust customers’ waste collection services to assure compliance with applicable legislation and maximize service efficiency
- Coordinate and perform necessary site visits and waste audits
- Work in South San Francisco Scavenger’s AMCS/Tower system and other databases to gather and document account information
- Help prepare informational and educational print, web, and social media content
- Give presentations to various community groups on services offered by South San Francisco Scavenger Company
- Assist in other public education and outreach tasks as necessary
- Work as a customer service representative as needed
Job Requirements
The following background and skills are required for this position:
- Associate degree, preferably including coursework in environmental studies, policy, or other related fields (bachelor’s degree preferred)
- General knowledge of solid waste industry practices (2 or more years related experience preferred)
- Ability to self-start, work independently, solve problems, and communicate clearly
- Commitment to complete tasks in a timely manner
- Comfortable speaking in front of a group
- Eagerness to learn
- Willingness to cross train and work as member of a team
- Professional appearance and manner
- Licensed California driver
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and ability to work in other platforms as needed
- Knowledge of Spanish and/or Mandarin/Cantonese (desired but not required)
Working Conditions & Compensation
A successful applicant will be able to:
- Accomplish tasks between field and office work during an 8-hour workday
- Sit for eight (8) hours a day with breaks
- Work at least six (6) hours at a computer
- Attend occasional evening and weekend meetings and events, which might require standing for over a four (4) hour period
- Conduct sorting audits of garbage, recyclables, and organics
The position is located at a facility that processes recyclables and organics and generates outside noise, odor, and airborne particles.
Full Time, exempt, pay range is $5,800-$6,700/month plus full benefits, including health, dental, and vision, and vacation/sick time and pension/profit-sharing.
