CLASSIFICATION: CUSTODIAN II
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, train and provide work direction to assigned custodial staff; perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school or facility to assure a clean, healthy and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Custodian II classification has lead responsibility for a small custodial crew. The Custodian I classification is responsible for performing custodial activities at an assigned school or facility and maintaining buildings and adjacent grounds.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Train and provide work direction to assigned custodial staff; assist with custodial evaluations as assigned.
Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school; sweep, scrub, mop, strip, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets.
Maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition; clean classrooms, cafeterias, lounges, offices, auditoriums, libraries, gymnasiums, locker rooms and other facilities as assigned; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; empty waste receptacles and pencil sharpeners; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed.
Clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; stock dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile and windows; unclog drains and toilets.
Pick up paper and other debris from school grounds, walkways and areas adjacent to school facilities; sweep concrete surfaces adjacent to school building.
Replace screws, light bulbs and tubes; clean chalkboards, chalk trays and erasers; prepare and clean tables, chairs and floors after breakfast, lunch and recess periods as assigned.
Lock and unlock doors, gates and windows as appropriate; turn lights on and off as needed; maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set alarms as appropriate.
Perform a variety of routine general maintenance and non-technical repairs to buildings, fixtures, walls, floors, equipment and furniture as assigned.
Maintain multipurpose room schedules and assure that set-ups are performed in a timely manner as directed.
Assist with inventory related matters; order custodial supplies.
Operate and respond to calls on a two-way radio; operate a variety of custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, stripping machines, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, leaf blowers and other equipment as assigned.
Prepare classrooms and multi-purpose rooms for special events or meetings; set-up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment for special events and activities; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following these events.
Prepare and maintain records and reports related to supply requests and orders, maintenance and repair requests, inventory and custodial schedules as directed.
Participate in other assigned activities such as moving and arranging furniture, cleaning and restoring campus facilities during vacation periods, raising and lowering flags, assisting with faculty mail, performing emergency cleanups, unplugging appliances and delivering materials to various locations.
Communicate with other staff, faculty, administrators and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve custodial related issues and concerns as necessary; respond to calls and faculty requests for various repairs and maintenance as assigned.
Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report vandalism and need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above and one year of experience performing custodial duties.
