Job Description Summary

The Trauma Educator, in collaboration with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager : Coordinates and evaluates trauma education to nursing staff, including new nursing staff caring for trauma patients. Works as a team member with the TMD, the TPM, and the trauma team to support the trauma programs and organization's strategic plans to meet the hospital's accreditation and regulatory reporting requirements.

Job Description

1. Professional Practice

  • a. In collaboration with the Nursing Leader in area of practice and Executive Director of Education, Training and Leadership Development oversees and monitors the effectiveness of care at the unit level.
  • b. Acts as an expert consultant to clinical nurses to optimize the effectiveness of care in achieving the desired patient outcomes.
  • c. Assists in the development of hospital and nursing policies, procedures, guidelines and order sets specific to the practice specialty.
  • d. Identifies ethical issues in nursing practice and guides staff and other providers in problem resolution by facilitating direct resolution or engaging the Ethics Consultation Service
  • e. Identifies and meets nursing care needs of patients and their families by integrating knowledge of the disease process into clinical practice.
  • f. Organizes combined meetings with orientees, preceptors and the nurse manager to review orientation process, provide timely feedback to the new staff member and address opportunities for improvement.
  • g. Provides consultation to the Nurse Leader relative to learning and practice related issues including the development of staff member specific learning management plans.

3. Education

  • a. Performs an annual educational needs assessment for the department or area of responsibility
  • b. Develops unit based / service based educational programs based on needs assessment
  • c. Coordinates new product, policy and procedure inservices on all shifts
  • d. Coordinates and assists with the presentation of mandatory education as evidenced by staff member completion percentages.
  • e. Responds to and maintains a flexible approach to newly identified educational needs.
  • f. Provides continuing educational programming for staff within the unit, department and organization.
  • Trauma Program Responsibility

    a. Works in collaboration with members of the trauma program, physicians, departments managers, and administration at SSH to achieve hospital goals

    b. Maintains knowledgeable of ACS Trauma Center Criteria

    c. Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to achieve the clinical criteria and administrative activities necessary, to ensure successful verification by the American College of Surgeons for Level II Trauma Center Designation

    d. Assists in preparation and participates in the American College of Surgeons site visits

    e. Assists and participates in the Trauma Program Operational Process. May include preparing minutes, reporting, and follow-up

    f. Works with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to further develop and advance the trauma program.

    g. Assists with trauma program administrative tasks as needed and requested

    h. Assists in the development of hospital and trauma policies, procedures, guidelines, processes and order sets specific to trauma practice and care

    Technology

    a. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the EHR and other business applications used in clinical areas.

    b. Uses web-based incident reporting system when appropriate

    c. Able to manipulate payroll software application

    d. Expertly uses and teaches appropriate use of biomedical equipment used in the assigned clinical areas.

    Professional Development

    a. Attends at least one program annually that will help meet the individual goals identified.

    b. Mentors staff in assigned area in their personal professional development including the Clinical Ladder, Specialty Certification and other educational opportunities.

    c. Maintains clinical competence in specialty area.

    d. Maintains current certification / licensure as required by position

    e. Acquires new certification as required by position

    f. Demonstrates leadership in nursing through involvement in professional organizations.

    Collaboration

    a. Meets with service area representatives to assess, discuss and plan staff educational opportunities

    b. Participates in committees as requested.

    c. Maintains a positive working relationship with all disciplines

    d. Is aware of and refers staff to appropriate resources

    e. Communicates with other clinical team members ensuring that all members are aware of medical or physical conditions resulting in a change in the plan of care for patients.

    f. Maintains accessibility to staff by making regular rounds on all shifts on units of responsibility and communicating needs to the Nurse Leader and executive Director

    g. Collaborates with leaders and clinical partner(s) to develop goals globally for the unit and individually for the staff members

    Performance Improvement

    a. Coordinates / participates in department system and performance improvement programs.

    b. Develops one performance / system improvement initiative that directly impacts professional nursing practice.

    c. Is knowledgeable about patient satisfaction scores in area of service and collaborates with Nurse Leader and staff members to improve scores.

    Requirements

    Minimum Education - Preferred :

    MSN preferred or matriculation into an accredited program approved by the Nursing Director.

    Minimum Work Experience :

    3-5 years in the clinical specialty area

    All American Nurses Credentialing Center Nurse planners are required to hold a graduate degree AND his / her baccalaureate or the graduate degree must be in nursing.

    Strong clinical experience in trauma nursing required, three years to five years clinical nursing experience in trauma care, critical care, or emergency department

    TNCC required

    TNCC Instructor / Director certification to be obtained within 12 months of hire

    Familiar with TCAR course

    Experience with data bases and Excel required

    Experience in developing, operationalizing, and evaluating the effectiveness of educational programs preferred

    Teaching experience or instructor status preferred

    Demonstrated leadership and communication skills. Commitment to adult learner education as a methodology for promoting continuous quality improvement in the delivery of patient care and services.

    Emergency Department position requires ACLS
