Under general supervision and collaboration with the OR Nurse Manager, plans, organizes, directs, and controls all activities involved in the effective, efficient, and economical utilization of material resources and personnel of the delegated specialty service, ensuring patient services is continuous and high quality. Responsible for orientation, training, and development of specialty services personnel. Responsible for streamlining the nursing intraoperative process for assigned service line or lines and for streamlining and maintaining preference cards of responsible service line or lines. Relates effectively with perioperative team members for continuity of care; maintains satisfactory relations with other departments and nursing units, participates as an ad hoc member of the Value Analysis Team and in all phases of education, maintenance of records, and clinical skills of personnel.
(Salary Range: $40.74-$82.53)
Minimum Education
Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing as validated through the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing
Minimum Work Experience
3 Years of OR nursing experience required. 2 years of management experience preferred.

Membership in professional organizations is recommended and certification in specialty areas is encouraged.

- Essential Functions
- 1. Reports to the OR Nurse manager. Works collaboratively with physicians, surgical services leadership and staff, materials management, and other ancillary departments. Supervises staff of delegated specialty service.
- Motivates and directs specialty service nurses, techs, preoperative assistants and orderlies.
- Collaborates with the Charge Nurse to determine room assignments appropriate to the skill level of specialty service team members
- Manages, plans, and monitors day-to-day clinical operations of specialty service.
- Develops and maintains specialty service preference cards and edits per staff request.
- Collaborates with specialty service team members to ensure all necessary equipment and supplies are available for their cases
- Assists room turnover and case set up.
- Provides direct patient care as needed and scheduled in the OR at least once a week to maintain their clinical skills.
- Orients new staff to specialty service, and communicates the needs of the orientees to the perioperative educator and Charge Nurse
- Evaluates new procedures/products for specialty service.
- Supports cost containment efforts through conservation of supplies and care of equipment.
- Responsible for initiating RN's when appropriate for specialty service.
- Identifies and coordinates the needs for physicians in all specialty services.
- Attends specialty service section meetings periodically to increase knowledge and skills for that specialty.
- Collaborates with OR manager in hiring and evaluating.
- Informs OR manager and/or Charge Nurse of specialty service activities and issues.
- Provides OR manager with information to develop the annual budget.
- Reviews and prioritizes specialty service capital needs.
- Identifies non-capital equipment and supply needs.
- Participates in hospital safety programs.
- Supports and enforces infection-control policies and procedures.
- Maintains a professional approach with confidentiality.
- Communicates effectively with the medical staff, nursing staff, and interdepartmental staff.
- Provides illness and vacation backup for OR Manager.

- Implements intraoperative nursing needs for specific patient population. Sets goals and prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet the goals and the physical and psychosocial needs of the patient.
- Assesses patient needs, plans and delivers expert nursing care to selected patients on a regular basis.

- Participates with the educator in meeting learning needs of nursing staff.

- Identifies supply and equipment requests with physicians in specialty area.

- Monitors processing, storing, restocking, and inventory specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment in collaboration with the CPD MGR/Materials.
- Monitors and adjust par levels for chargeable and non-chargeable specialty items in collaboration with the materials clerk.
