Position Overview
The Associate Underwriter works under the direction of the Senior Underwriters and the Underwriting Supervisor, supporting the team in evaluating and accepting applications for insurance coverage. This role requires sensible judgment and meticulous attention to detail in determining risk. The Associate Underwriter must produce accurate quotes that are both competitive for the customer and profitable for the company, with a primary focus on Property and Casualty for Personal and Commercial Lines. At SSIU, our underwriters use their exceptional analytical skills every day to assess and measure risk—decisions that are critical to driving the company’s success and profitability.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Risk Evaluation & Quoting:
- Evaluate risks and prepare quotes under underwriter supervision.
- Process renewals on accounts and handle rate endorsements.
- Determine the acceptability of risks and establish appropriate premiums in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and regulatory requirements.
- Agent Support & Communication:
- Monitor and respond to agent inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Ensure agents receive clear, accurate information regarding risk selection and pricing guidelines.
- Maintain a professional and courteous attitude when interacting with agents, responding promptly and ethically to requests and issues.
- Conduct field visits to agent offices to build relationships and solicit new business applications.
- Policy Processing & Workflow Management:
- Process renewals and endorsements in accordance with underwriting guidelines and company standards.
- Ensure all documentation and policy changes are accurately recorded and processed in a timely manner.
- Operational Efficiency & Other Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of operational processes and efficiencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the underwriting team and company objectives.
Other Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree is preferred, particularly in Business, Risk Management, or a related field; however, equivalent industry experience will also be considered.
- Exposure to underwriting concepts, along with general insurance knowledge and experience.
- Proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel is required.
