SUMMARY
The Senior Director of Advocacy Programming is a staff position providing opportunities to use initiative and mature judgment in a variety of management tasks designed to support and advance the Texas Advocacy Concentration, the Advocacy Program, and the law school.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Applicants must have the ability to work independently. Essential job functions for the position include:
• Developing programs, mentoring opportunities, and other activities to engage students pursuing the Texas Advocacy Concentration.
• Managing all aspects of intramural competitions.
• Planning orientations each semester for students enrolled in the Texas Advocacy Concentration.
• Providing academic advising for students pursuing the Texas Advocacy Concentration but not pursuing the Honors Certificate.
• Monitoring compliance with requirements of Texas Advocacy Concentration.
• Working with the Associate Dean for Clinical Studies, the Vice President of Advocacy, and the Director of the Frank Evans Center for Conflict Resolution to help recruit adjunct professors to teach courses for the Texas Advocacy Concentration.
• Providing administrative support for adjunct professors teaching courses for the Texas Advocacy Concentration.
• Working with the Associate Dean for Clinical Studies, the Vice President of Advocacy, and the Director of the Frank Evans Center for Conflict Resolution to develop a process for evaluating the effectiveness of adjunct professors teaching courses for the Texas Advocacy Concentration.
• Helping recruit attorneys and advocacy scholars for breakout sessions of weekend advocacy classes.
• Overseeing process to provide CLE credit for attorneys participating in weekend Advocacy courses.
• Helping recruit practice round judges for advocacy teams.
• Educating adjunct professors and students about applicable law school policies.
• Helping with regional competitions the Advocacy Program hosts for other schools.
• Helping with the South Texas Mock Trial Challenge.
• Acting as a South Texas representative to the national advocacy community.
• Working, in coordination with the Vice President of Advocacy and the Office of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement, to engage alumni of the Advocacy Program.
• Working, in coordination with the Vice President of Advocacy and the Marketing Department, to promote the Texas Advocacy Concentration and the Advocacy Program.
• Coordinating efforts with the Vice President of Advocacy on a regular basis.
• Completing other tasks as assigned.
• Complying with all aspects of the Law School’s Customer Service standards.
• Facilitating activities designed to advance the mission of the law school and the Advocacy Program.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise and support adjunct professors teaching courses for the Texas Advocacy Concentration.


QUALIFICATIONS

Must be professional and confidential of all department data and correspondence. The person must have a poised and professional image; strong ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively and efficiently with all employees, visitors and students while projecting a positive image for the area and college. Service oriented with ability to make all visitors feel welcome. Must be computer literate with proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) with ability to learn new programs as necessary. Must be detail-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Applicants must have a J.D. degree. At least five years of practice experience is strongly preferred.


LANGUAGE SKILLS
Proficient in both spoken and written English. Ability to interpret and explain complex data. Ability to effectively and professionally communicate in one-on-one and small group situations to students, alumni, clients, and other employees of the organization.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to perform basic to intermediate math is essential. Must possess the ability to analyze numerical data and detect patterns, errors and trends.


REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define routine problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to solve routine problems and/or deal with a variety of variables in situations, especially when department head may be out of office or unavailable. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Licensed to practice in Texas or eligible for admission to the Texas Bar by reciprocity.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. Occasional light to moderate lifting from floor level, at waist, and above shoulders required. Infrequent bending and stooping necessary. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision to accurately input data and proofread; distance vision to recognize and assist visitors to the department.

Fast paced, multi-tasking, non-smoking work environment. Must be able to work the general business schedule of the College (9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) plus evenings and weekends as needed.

The Advocacy Program at South Texas College of Law Houston operates to create, foster, and assist advocacy training. While South Texas has long-standing reputation for excellence in national moot-court and mock-trial competitions, the Advocacy Program has grown and matured to reflect the evolving nature of the provision of skills training in legal education. The Advocacy Program seeks to engage students in a variety of opportunities to help them find their own voices as advocates.
