Surgical Services Manager


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


Under the supervision and direction of the Director of Surgical Services, the Surgical Services Manager is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient surgical service operations in accordance with regulatory and accreditation standards and the facility mission, vision and values. Responsibilities include ensuring staffing for the hospital and Outpatient Center operating rooms, assisting with the operating room schedule, overseeing sterile processing, ensuring accurate records of implants and sterile processing, managing supply use and physician marketing. Plans, coordinates and directs all surgical patient care and all related activities of the Operating Room and Sterile Processing in compliance with local, state, federal regulatory standards. Assists with activities such as: Risk Management, Infection Control, Employee Health, Performance Improvement, and Recruitment / Retention. In conjunction with the Director of Surgical Services, the Surgical Services Manager shall assist in the development and implementation of short-term and long-term operational and capital budgets related to clinical services to ensure resources to adequately maintain clinical operations within both facilities.

Reports in good faith, any known or suspected activity that appears to violate laws, rules, regulations or the SP Code of Conduct. Fulfills annual continuing education requirements.

Patient Population:


The patient population served by South Texas Spine & Surgical Hospital Outpatient Center 6 months to adult and geriatric patients requiring or seeking pain, infusion and/or surgical intervention.


Physical Requirements:


May be expected to lift up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. May be expected to push or pull 150-500 pounds with assistance. Work is of medium demand; walking or standing most of the time while on duty. Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required. Optimal auditory acuity required. Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or armamentarium is essential to performing assigned duties. Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit. May be subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations, limited radiation, hazardous chemicals, or infectious diseases where judgment as to precautions needed to be taken is essential. Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced and required by patient care and needs of the surgical team. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to the requirements of the job.


OSHA Exposure Classification:


Job Category I. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which standard precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn.

Qualifications:


  • Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing with current and valid licensure with Texas State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
  • BLS & ACLS required or obtained within 30 days of hire and PALS certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required or obtainable within 2 years of hire.
  • Master’s degree highly preferred
  • CNOR certification highly preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience in the Operating Room/or related area.
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the hospital
  • Knowledge of state, federal and accrediting body regulations and standards related to healthcare
  • Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English, with additional languages preferred
  • Demonstrates ability to comprehend written and oral instructions
  • Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for his or her own professional advancement and that of others
  • Must be computer literate with basic fundamental computer skills that are required to perform essential job-related duties, including fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Duties and Responsibilities:


PEOPLE

  • Facilitates the development of appropriate working relationships with Administration, CNO, Medical Staff, hospital staff, corporate staff, patients and family members.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills with staff, management, physicians, patients and family.
  • Demonstrates skills as a team player.
  • As a leader, shows appropriate delegation, while directing and supervising nursing and ancillary personnel in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating patient care.
  • Provides direct patient care in clinical areas as needed and demonstrates necessary clinical competence.
  • Effectively accesses Surgery Partners Service area resources and implements recommendations.
  • Demonstrates ability to solve problems timely and constructively; proactively gathers needed facts and data.
  • Maintains sufficient and qualified staff to meet the needs of the facility; Flexes staff to accommodate schedules.
  • Assists with interviews and hiring of new personnel.
  • Participates in staff meetings for department and facility at regular intervals for informative and educational purposes to build appropriate communication and effective team environment.
  • With the assistance of the Director, evaluates employees based in the OR prior to the employees 90-day employment and then on an annual basis.
  • Provides verbal and written counseling in a timely manner for attendance issues and recommends further disciplinary action when needed.
  • Facilitates and coordinates the orientation process and in-services as needed for employees.
  • Delegates coordination of department needs when out of the department.
  • Maintains professional attire and exhibits leadership skills that will assist the team in developing and maturing.
  • Represents Director of Surgical Services in his/her absence.

SERVICE

  • Establishes and maintains exceptional services to all customers including physicians, patients and employees with the goal of delighting all customers.
  • Participates in service recovery by taking ownership of the situation and correcting problems. Strives to promote customer satisfaction and follows through with the situation to correct the problem. Keeps customers informed of progress related to clinical operations and provides comfort, information and assistance during the process.
  • Develops and maintains a culture of service in department, connecting organizational values to actions. Sets example for team members by participating in service initiatives and encourages others to do so as well.
  • Models appropriate interaction with physicians, patients and staff to ensure high level of service in all areas of responsibility.
  • Participates in professional and community organizations/events to represent the facility as appropriate.
  • Responsible for case verifications for needed equipment and staff.
  • Provides regular communication updates at huddles / staff meetings to keep staff well informed.

QUALITY

  • Executes day-to-day leadership responsibilities assuring safe and effective clinical operations.
  • Assures that systems are in place to comply with state, federal, and accrediting body.
  • Assures the delivery of quality clinical care through participation in Surgery Partners benchmarking programs.
  • Assures facility clinical policies and procedures are appropriate and meet standards.
  • Assures patient safety, through nurturing qualified staff, offering continuing education of personnel, maintaining equipment and overall physical plant safety.
  • Reviews and participates in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Assures that contracted clinical services are in compliance with governmental and regulatory bodies.
  • Assures that all aspects of facility clinical operations are in compliance with all required data and entered accurately and timely for all regulatory agencies.
  • Assists with routine quality audits and survey readiness rounds.
  • Performs or delegates monthly equipment checks.

FINANCE

  • Participation in development of clinical operating budget, capital budget, staffing and volume projections.
  • Assists in the development of plans for cost containment in all clinical areas and implements and oversees the same to ensure successful completion of goals.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of action plans with the Director for the OR and sterile processing areas to ensure course correction as requested by leadership.
  • Reviews productivity of the OR department to ensure appropriate staffing as well as fiscal responsibility.
  • Assists with supply PAR level management.
  • Maintains updated lists for equipment / instrumentation needs.

GROWTH

  • Establishes and maintains communication with physicians to ensure effective problem solving.
  • Sets yearly goals for clinical departments and self and creates strategies and establishes time frames to accomplish goals.
  • Participates in regular and effective planning meetings with the medical staff, Clinical Committees, and Employees.
  • Organizes a clinical internal marketing initiative to ensure excellence in service and growth of market share.
  • Assists with new physician orientation/acclimation.
