Overview
South Texas Veterinary Surgery is seeking a skilled and compassionate Veterinary Surgical Technician to join our specialized surgical team.
The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for veterinary surgery and advanced patient care, with proficiency in surgical preparation, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative recovery. In this role, you will provide critical support to our board certified surgeon during procedures, ensuring optimal patient outcomes and comfort.
All STVS technicians are expected to maintain a positive, collaborative work ethic across all practices within San Antonio Veterinary Specialists.
Duties, Abilities, and Responsibilities:
- Have professional appearance, grooming, and demeanor.
- Good time management, punctuality, attendance, and reliability.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and protocols.
- Must be able to lift 40 pounds independently, and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.
- Ability to walk, bend, stoop, stand and reach constantly during a minimum 8-hour day.
- Basic Veterinary Medical concepts, including surgical terminology.
- Familiar with Canine and Feline anatomy and physiology.
- Assist veterinarian with medical exams and post-operative rechecks.
- Obtain weight and vital signs for the patient, obtain thorough patient history, and record results in the patient's electronic medical record using appropriate medical terminology.
- Collect and prepare samples for in-house and reference labs.
- Knowledge and ability to intake and discharge patients, including delivering post-operative instructions in a competent and friendly manner.
- Proficient in placement of IV catheters and administering IV, IM, and SQ injections.
- Administer medications and treatments following DVM orders.
- Knowledge of specialty surgical procedures and surgical instrumentation.
- Proficiency in calculations of medications, constant rate infusions, unit conversions, fluid rates, etc.
- Demonstrate proficiency with anesthesia monitoring, anesthesia machines, ventilators, and autoclaves; ability to identify if equipment is not functioning appropriately.
- Ability to create an anesthetic plan for surgical patients, taking into account patient’s comorbidities.
- Preparing patients for surgery and enforcing sterility and safety of patients.
- Ability to monitor surgical anesthesia with a clear idea of abnormal conditions and anesthetic risks.
- Ability to accurately monitor, check, and record vital parameters of anesthetized patient during surgery and recovery.
- Scrubbing in for soft-tissue and orthopedic surgeries; must demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation.
- Applying and maintaining a variety of bandages.
- Clean, disinfect, organize, and wrap surgical instruments for sterilization.
- Replenishing supplies in all areas of the hospital throughout the shift as needed.
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization of pre-operative area, O.R., exam rooms, and recovery area.
Education/licensing:
- Eligibility to work in the United States Required.
- High School Diploma (or equivalent) Required.
- LVT - Licensed Veterinary Technician Credentials Required -or- eligible to start courses within 12 months.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.00 - $24.00 per hour
Expected hours: 36 – 40 per week
