Middle School Elective Targeted Services Summer School Teacher (Multiple Positions Available)

POSITION INFORMATION: Program dates and times are July 7 - July 31, Monday - Thursday, 9:00am - 1:00pm. The daily schedule for this position is 8:30am - 1:15pm. The program site is Cottage Grove Middle School. Summer School planning and teacher professional development will occur on June 24 or June 26.

Compensation:
Salary schedule based on Teacher contract, $32/hour.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide instruction and guidance for students attending Middle School Targeted Services Summer School.
The instructor may propose and plan an elective class in collaboration with the Extended Learning Coordinator within the following parameters:
  • The elective incorporates one or more of the following content areas: physical activity, health, STEM, literacy, mathematics, computer science, fine arts, social studies, career and technical education.
  • Instructional approaches incorporate project-based activities that are highly engaging, allow for student voice and choice, and align with state standards.
  • The teacher is available to teach between 2 and 4 hours per day, depending on student enrollment.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Each day students will participate in a morning check and connect session, lunch, and three structured class periods: math, ELA, and an elective. Check and connect, ELA, and elective content will be planned around a common theme. Teachers will lead check and connect sessions, teach one elective, and have the option of a duty-free lunch break. Teachers will be assigned to a team, either sixth grade or a seventh/eighth grade combination. The staffing ratio will be 20:1.

Every student will have access to a mobile device.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, investigate, and communicate.
  2. Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods. Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  3. Incorporate SEL curriculum and AVID strategies into check and connect sessions and elective instruction.
  4. Develop and teach elective content related to the program theme and in collaboration with team members.
  5. Utilize Schoology as a platform for student learning and family engagement.
  6. Create a positive environment to ensure successful learning for all students.
  7. Communicate with families to share information about program content and student progress.
  8. Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, site coordinators, and extended learning coordinator in order to resolve students' behavioral and academic concerns.
  9. Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  10. Guide and counsel students with adjustment and/or academic issues or special academic interests.
  11. Understand and maintain boundaries and confidentiality with students, families and staff.
  12. Supervise students during transitions between classes/activities, arrival, and dismissal.
  13. Other duties as assigned

Required:
  1. Current Minnesota license as appropriate and required for elective content.
  2. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  3. Demonstrated creativity, flexibility and enthusiasm to support students through innovative instruction.
  4. Demonstrated collaboration and relationship-building skills.
  5. Prompt, regular and reliable attendance.
  6. Communicates with students, parents, co-workers, supervisors, and the community in a positive and responsive way that is consistently welcoming and enhances effective work relationships.
  7. Demonstrates an appreciation of diversity in all interactions and job functions.
