Position: Orchard Lead
Reports to: Farm Manager
Classification: Full Time, Non-Exempt
Southall is a premier destination bringing nature, produce and people together in a powerful and unique way. The Orchard Lead is a part of the Farm Cultivation Team, which operates a 2-acre vegetable operation, four acres of apple and berry orchards, as well as producing pasture-raised eggs, chickens, turkeys and ducks. The food produced supplies our onsite restaurants and events, and is grown with organic and regenerative methods as much as possible. The Orchard Lead will take part in all farm activities, but with special focus on the apple orchard and berry production. The position involves a significant amount of independent work, but with the support of an experienced team and opportunities to learn on the job.
Responsibilities
- Monitor orchards for tree health, pests and disease.
- Carry out standard orchard operations like spraying, mulching and mowing.
- Ensure trellises and orchard infrastructure are maintained.
- Fully participate in Farm Cultivation Team general vegetable and livestock duties during periods when the orchard needs less work.
- Lead crews for major orchard operations like harvest and pruning.
- Work with the Farm Manager to plan orchard soil health and tree replacement programs.
- Work with the Farm Manager to improve orchard and farm systems and work towards regenerative goals.
Requirements:
- The job will also require lifting of objects 50 lbs. multiple times per day.
- Parts of job require a serious degree of physical effort.
- Willingness to work outside, rain or shine, heat or cold.
- Ability to stay focused and efficient without supervision.
- Ability to learn quickly and a desire to build expertise in regenerative fruit and berry production.
Skills and Experience:
We are looking for someone who can demonstrate a deep interest in regenerative farming, with a focus on perennial systems. Some orchard or berry experience is preferred, but we are willing to train the right candidate in the skills required for the job.
- Valid drivers license
- 1 Season of farming preferred
- Demonstrated ability to work independently
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
