Job Description
POSITION TITLE : Certified Nursing Assistant
QUALIFICATIONS : High school education and completion of an approved nursing assistant course with a Virginia State Certification. One year of experience as a Certified Nurse Assistant and successful completion of at least 20 semester hours of college credits preferred. Must be certified in Basic Life Support and Basic First Aid. Some experience working with school-age children in a public or private school setting is preferred. Must have the ability to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required tasks. Must have the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Good knowledge and understanding of child growth and development. Some knowledge of the instructional goals, policies and procedures of public schools is helpful. Must have considerable patience and ability to work effectively with children, young adults and faculty members. Must have the ability to assist in the implementation of health services programs for children and to maintain health records in a confidential manner.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS : Assists in and performs routine student screenings. Performs office support duties such as recording data, records maintenance and development of new student health records. Contacts the parents of sick or injured students. Operates and maintains a school clinic under supervision of the school nurse. Provides care for students requiring specialized nursing care while in school. Performs other related duties as assigned.
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK : Duties are typically performed in a school clinic and other school settings. Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds and moving of students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary. Occasional exposure to potentially infectious diseases and blood borne pathogens may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchair and other mechanical devices may be necessary. Daily close and personal contact with students and regular contact with school teachers, counselors, psychologists and other specialists is necessary.
