Key Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job
  • Assists in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the Activity Programs of this facility. Assures that a current resident activity schedule is maintained for each resident.
    • Meets with administration, medical and nursing staff, and other related departments in planning activities; Coordinates activities with other departments as necessary; Involves the resident/family in planning activities when possible.
    • Assists in developing and implementation of policies and procedures to identify the spiritual, social, recreational, and emotional needs of the resident.
    • Assists in the development of and participates in regularly scheduled orientation and in-service training programs in relation to the social, emotional and recreational needs of residents.
  • Participates in community planning related to the interests of the facility and the services and needs of the resident and their family.
    • Encourages residents to participate in religious activities through religious services, reading material, visits with clergy, etc., to fulfill their basic religious needs.
  • Provides information to resident/family as to the activity programs available to the residents.
    • Obtains information concerning the resident’s background to better provide activities to meet their needs.
    • Maintains contact with the resident’s family, involving them with nonmedical progress reports as necessary. Interview residents/families as necessary, and in a private setting. Assists in making appointments for the resident/family as requested or appropriate.
  • Records and maintains activity progress notes, as well as a record of resident activities.
  • Develops and maintains a good working rapport with other departments within the facility, and outside community health, welfare, and social agencies, to assure that activity programs can be properly maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
  • Keeps abreast of current federal and state regulations, as well as professional standards and recommendations on changes in policies and procedures to the Occupational Therapist and Director of Nursing.
  • Assists in the development of the department budget and monitors expenditures to stay within that budget.
  • Performs administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, charge slips, reports, etc., and submitting to the Occupational Therapist as required.
  • Provides consultation to members of our staff, community agencies, etc., in efforts to solve the needs and problems of the resident through the development of activity/social services programs.
  • Makes written and oral reports/recommendations to the Occupational Therapist and the Director of Nursing of LTC concerning the operation of the activity department.
  • Reports all safety incidents/accidents and faulty equipment conditions immediately and document same.
    • Be alert for any change in the resident’s condition. Report to charge nurse immediately.
  • Participates in discharge planning, development and implementation of activity plans, schedules and resident assessments.
Other Functions
  • Serves on various committees of the facility as may be appointed by the Occupational Therapist or recommended by the Director of Nursing in Long Term Care.
  • Participates and assists in departmental studies and projects as assigned, or that may become necessary.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent resident care information to assure resident rights are protected.
  • Other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate, or as may be directed by the Occupational Therapist or Director of Nursing of LTC.
Additional Details:
Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required
  • Certification as a Therapeutic Recreational Specialist within three (3) years of hire
  • Basic Life Support
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Experience Required
  • Previous experience working with older patients on activities programs
  • Experience using basic craft materials preferred
Knowledge of
  • Previous experience working with Long Term care activities.
Skills in
  • Fluent in the English language
  • Must be able to clearly communicate with Long Term Care patients
Ability to
  • Must have a current State of Alaska driver’s license.
  • Ability to drive the hospital services van and demonstrate competence.
