Position Summary: The Classroom Nurse provides nursing care to a student(s) with special health needs, including the administration of medication and specialized health care procedures as well as educational support services in the classroom setting and related work as apparent or assigned.
Position Requirements: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing in LPN or RN nursing degree is required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Prior experience working with children with special health needs in a school or pediatric setting is highly desirable. Certification in CPR and basic First Aid is required prior to hire. Medication administration and specialized health care procedures training if needed. Additional specialized training or certification in health care procedures (medication administration, specialized equipment) may be required. This position will be required to ride the bus to and from school with the student(s).
Language Skills: Ability to follow oral and written instructions and effectively communicate with other health professionals. Read, write, and comprehend instructions, short correspondences, and memos. Present information in one-to-one and small group situations to students, parents, and or staff.
Physical Demands: Mobility and ability to lift and/or assist individuals who weigh up to 50 pounds. Work regularly requires standing and speaking or hearing, frequently requires walking and stopping, kneeling, bending, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Other Skills & Abilities: Maintain flexibility in day-to-day dealing with staff and students. Maintain the confidentiality of all information regarding students. Ability to follow technical oral and written instruction in exact detail; ability to communicate positively, respectfully, and responsively with students, parents, co-workers, supervisors, and community members; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, administrators, and the general public. Perform duties within a tight daily schedule and with an awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Consistent and reliable attendance is required.
