General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Assistant Director, ESL Adjunct Instructors are responsible for supporting students’ English as a Second Language development from true beginner to career/college-ready academic levels through whole-class and/or online instruction in leveled ESL classes.
The ESL adjunct instructor is responsible for supporting up to 16 ESL students as they use in-class, text-based, and/or online materials to build English language skills in leveled ESL classes. They create lesson plans, introduce students to text-based and online study programs, conduct high-quality, interactive face-to-face and/or online classes, use data from regular measurements of students’ progress to guide instruction, and support students in and out of class to achieve learning goals.
There are 3 types of instruction in the SCC ESL Program:
- SCC ESL program classes: Classes meet 6 hours a week in the morning or evenings by Zoom or at SCC campus locations. Classes meet for 4 quarters. Classes are leveled by English ability.
- SCC ESL Learning Centers: Multi-level classes that meet 3 hours per week with open enrollment for students enrolled in the program to gain additional practice and to help newly oriented students prepare to join the next available quarter.
- Family Literacy classes: Classes meet 5 days a week for 2 hours each morning at select LPS schools. Classes are multi-level with semi-open enrollment for parents of LPS elementary students.
This is a part-time temporary position. Paid training is available and required.
Essential Functions
- Provide course expectations to all students upon student entry into the class.
- Develop and implement ESL classes based on student’s assessment results, ESL best practices, SCC ESL program standards, and student goals for study.
- Support students with appropriate advice regarding studies and learning. Advise students about materials and information that may be useful to their English language improvement including course level adjustments, additional English language learning resources, pursuing post-secondary study, work preparation, and strategies for improving English language skills.
- Maintain accurate records and participate in supporting program requirements. Complete student attendance in a timely manner. Instruct students on how to keep accurate records such as student attendance sign-in sheets. Assist in student retention efforts. Support program progress review efforts and encourage students to participate in them.
- Maintain and report a minimum of 8 hours of professional development annually.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge about instructing non-native speakers of English
- Knowledge of working in multi-lingual, multi-level classes
- Use of computers such as online learning programs, email, shared digital information, computer-aided instruction, and audio-visual communication software
- Must reside in Nebraska.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in any field.
- Minimum 6 months of ESL instructional experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Training and/or <1 year ESL instruction in the US .
- Experience teaching adult ESL learners.
Salary
$26 per hour

Part-time temporary employees are eligible to participate in the TIAA retirement plan through a Roth, SRA, or 457(B) account, with no match provided by the College.
Schedule
Normal working hours for this part-time temporary position are scheduled between 9:00 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is a part-time temporary position with assignments based on program needs.
