It is the duty of the East Jefferson Levee District Police Department to patrol and inspect the levees and floodwalls that surround Jefferson Parish and to check various gauges and flood structures to ensure the integrity of the levee system.
The Department also serves to protect lives and property, while also enforcing federal, state, and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. The incumbent in this position performs responsible, commissioned, and law enforcement duties in the prevention of crime and to protect life and property, while armed and uniformed.
The East Jefferson Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the umbrella of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) and includes Jefferson Parish, New Orleans and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank.
The incumbent in this position provides a full range of police services for the East Jefferson Levee District by enforcing federal, state, and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level, i.e. Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant, and/or Police Captain. The incumbent in this position is required to be POST certified.
Applicants must have Civil Service test scores for 2100-Protective Services Exam (PSE) to be considered for this vacancy unless exempted by Civil Service rules or policy. Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of law enforcement experience.
Experience Substitution
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.
Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Protects the integrity of the levee system via motorized vehicle and/or foot patrol. Works with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies as necessary. Provides security for the public that utilizes the levee system for recreational purposes. Routinely checks businesses and construction sites contiguous with the levee system to ensure proper permitting protocol is followed. Issues warning notices, citations, misdemeanor summons, and make lawful arrests when necessary. Take appropriate action when necessary to have any violations corrected. Operates on-board police laptop computer. Take appropriate action when necessary to have any violations corrected.

Completes all applicable paperwork that is mandated by law and documentation that is essential to the mission of the levee district.

Attends in-service training to maintain minimum POST requirements. Training includes, but is not limited to: firearms training, first aid, PR 24 baton training, proper police equipment usage, and any further training that the department believes will enhance the officer's ability to perform his/her duties. Must complete the CPRA "Certified Levee Inspector" training program.

Responds as required to manmade or natural disasters, the nature of which may be hazardous and/or require arduous physical activity under varied climatic conditions.
5% Testifies in proceedings in court as required.
NOTE: The East Jefferson Levee District is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the mission is to protect the residents of Jefferson Parish from tidal surge, wind-driven water and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required, remaining on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.
Officers must be able to safely and efficiently operate all police vehicles and equipment, and must be able to lift, throw, and place 40-50-pound sandbags during emergencies and disasters.
Monthly supplemental pay effective upon hire. The incumbent in this position is required to be POST certified.
