Microbiology Laboratory TechnicianDepartment of BiologyCollege of Science, Technology, Engineering and MathThis position is for instructional support for classes in biology, primarily those in the field of microbiology. The position requires oversight and management of the Department of Biology microbiology prep facility, which serves faculty and students in all aspects of academic endeavor including teaching and research. Responsibilities include: Oversight and management of microbiology prep facility and equipment.Maintenance and on-going quality assessment of microbiology stock cultures.Preparation of microbiological media and cultures for selected classes.Manage simultaneous preparation of materials for multiple classes.Preparation of solutions and reagents for selected classes.Assist in laboratory set-up for selected classes.Instruction and training of student workers and research students in safe use of the prep facility.Maintenance of chemical safety data sheets and waste disposal records.Decontaminate and dispose of biohazardous waste.Management of chemicals, equipment, and supply inventories for microbiology prep facility.Maintenance of microbiology prep facility and allied classroom areas.Supervision of student workers assigned to the prep room area.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree plus) in biology, chemistry, medical technology, or related field with coursework in microbiology. Ability to work with a broad base of individuals including microbiology faculty, other biology faculty, and undergraduate and graduate students.Demonstrated organizational skillsExperience in culturing microorganisms, utilizing microbial media, media preparation, and sterile transfer.Demonstrated experience handling hazardous materials, including microbial pathogens and chemicals.Experience with biochemical instrumentation.Evidence of good oral and written communication skills.
