AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: Drive agency transit bus/van or other assigned vehicles. Responsible for safety of assigned vehicles, passengers, and cargo. The performance or supervision of routine maintenance and the keeping of required vehicle and passenger records. This is a 30 hour a week position.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  1. Drive assigned vehicle over established route at appointed time, or drive assigned vehicle on non-scheduled route as needed to meet appointments.
  2. Maintain vehicle in clean, safe, and dependable condition, being responsible for minor repairs and cleaning of bus inside and out every other week, more often if needed. Report needs for major repairs to supervisor.
  3. If vehicle in custody of the driver is involved in an accident, stop and assist passengers of own vehicle, as well as occupants of other involved vehicles. Cooperate with investigating officers. Report essential information to supervisor immediately.
  4. Assist passengers to enter and leave vehicle and assist with packages, groceries, etc. if the passenger’s age and or physical condition requires such assistance.
  5. Operate the bus lift for the purpose of transporting passengers in a wheelchair and be able to properly fasten the wheelchair safely and securely.
  6. Comply with applicable state and local laws governing operation of motor vehicles. Personally pay fines levied by courts for improper operation.
  7. Keep records of operating expenses and maintenance. Submit these records to the supervisor as directed. Sell tickets and return cash for same to the office as instructed by supervisor.
  8. Furnish other written reports related to transit as directed.
  9. Attend defensive driving and safety classes scheduled by the State Department of Roads.
  10. Assist in daily upkeep and general housekeeping duties of the office area(s).
  11. Perform other duties as assigned, in keeping with the operations and efficiency of the transit system and SENCA operations at assigned work location.
  12. Actively participate in efforts to meet the SENCA goals identified within the current SENCA Strategic Plan.
  13. Actively participate in setting, tracking, and attaining the three national ROMA Next Generation Goals.
  14. Demonstrate active employee engagement by using individual talents, providing a consistent level of high performance, building connections and professional networks, having high energy, broadening responsibilities, and building on those responsibilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience in operation of bus or accessible bus (lift) for the purpose of transporting passengers is highly desirable.
  2. Maintenance and mechanical knowledge of vehicles highly desirable.
  3. Physically able to lift packages (up to 50 pounds) and assist passengers on and off vehicle.
  4. Possess and retain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Nebraska and be able to travel on agency business. Must have a driving record free of substantiated driving infractions that would have a direct impact on the transit system and insurance costs.
  5. Pass a pre-employment drug test, in compliance with Federal, State, and SENCA regulations.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Establish a cooperative relationship with staff members, volunteer workers, program beneficiaries, clients, and others with whom the job provides or requires contact.
  2. Be knowledgeable of all SENCA programs/services and how to access and utilize them.
  3. Be available to attend out of the area training meetings and/or conferences as assigned by supervisor.
  4. Must have ability to empathize with program participants.
  5. Maintain an effective working relationship with staff, program participants, the general public, and other state and federal agencies.
  6. Maintain ones’ self at all times so as not to bring discredit upon themselves or the agency.
  7. Participate in a random drug and alcohol testing pool.

  9. Able to communicate effectively and to understand and apply communicated information.
  10. Able to work with others following a team model and to apply teamwork principles.
