JOB TITLE: Government/Military Financial Aid Office Assistant
DEPARTMENT: Student Resources and Financial Aid
SUPERVISOR: Director of Student Resources and Financial Aid
PAY RATE: $12.10/hr, plus full tuition waiver.
HOURS: 29/week
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Southeastern’s Military Affairs Financial Aid Assistant serves as the School Certifying Official (SCO). The SCO processes and updates all Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefits for eligible students enrolled at Southeastern.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Process VA benefits and military-related financial aid
- Certify student enrollment to VA
- Report changes in enrollment status to VA
- Monitor student’s grades to ensure satisfactory progress is being made
- Report when a student was terminated due to unsatisfactory progress
- Monitor student’s conduct and report when student is suspended or dismissed
- Maintain school eligibility with VA
- Complete required training from VA
- Remain up-to-date on new VA policies and procedures
- Maintain accurate and complete records for students
- Perform VA audits
- Assist the Government Financial Aid Coordinator
- Complete training from the Department of Education on Federal Pell Grants
- Maintain working knowledge of policies and procedures for the Pell Grant and North Carolina Need Based Scholarship
- Assist students with questions related to Government Aid
- Help the Government Financial Aid Coordinator process Federal and State Aid
- Communicate key information to students and institutional offices
- Identify and prioritize problems; perform research and offer solutions, options/scholarships, and strategies
- Represent the Financial Aid team in a professional, knowledgeable, and welcoming manner
- Gain a general knowledge of government, institutional, and external financial aid
- Assist in the development of overall office strategy and culture
- Participate in all assigned meetings; provide new ideas and support
OTHER DUTIES & REPONSIBILITIES
Complete training as required and assist in the training of staff as requested

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
- Responsible for performing reconciliation of VA benefits and other military related scholarships in conjunction with Accounting Services
- Assist Government Financial Aid Coordinator in reconciliation and audits as needed
EXTENT OF PUBLIC CONTACT
Consistent interaction with prospective and current students; offices on campus, especially Accounting Services, Registrar’s Office, and Admissions; and consistent interaction with VA.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
Work on-site in the office. Travel is not normally required.
