What are the responsibilities and job description for the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Program Lead Instructor - Mt. Pleasant Center position at Southeastern Community College?
The Adult Education Lead Teacher is responsible for providing competency-based instruction and programing to help adult learners develop the skills necessary for employment, training, and/or post-secondary education. The Lead Teacher will provide structured course plans; identify and develop curriculum; conduct student orientations, and coordinate testing and data management. Additionally, this position will spend a portion of their time providing leadership to other AEL instructors, such as but not limited to, modeling and teaching best practices and strategies in instruction, technology, classroom management, and student documentation processes.
This position is full-time at 40 hours per week with an annual salary of $45,760. One of the areas assigned to this position is coordination of the literacy program, which involves training volunteer tutors and pairing them with adult learners who are in beginning reading and math literacy levels. Candidates with education and/or experience directly related to this assignment are preferred.

The Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Program Lead Instructor will abide by the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the Board of Trustees.
This position is based at SCC’s Mt. Pleasant Center but travel to all campuses will be required.
Essential Duties Summary
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Commitment to the comprehensive community college philosophy.
- Comply with relevant program, institutional, state and federal policies, guidelines, and procedures.
- Prepare lesson plans that provide all students an opportunity to learn and provide instruction as assigned.
- Monitor student progress toward improving academic, life, and work skills, which may include facilitating high school equivalency diploma preparation and/or English language acquisition.
- Conduct student intake, assess student learning, and accurately document program services.
- Actively participate in team meetings and complete a minimum of 12 hours of professional development each fiscal year.
- Develop and facilitate AEL classes, including assessment, data management and documentation of student participation and progress at assigned site(s) and in accordance with relevant program, institutional, state and federal policies.
- Assist the AEL Director in identifying and recommending potential instructors, and orientation and training of new instructors.
- Provide leadership and/or oversight, as assigned, for particular program area(s), e.g., literacy; ESL; distance learning; student transitions to training, college or employment; contextualized instruction; HSED instructional resources; etc.
- Contribute to the expansion and implementation of the AEL program, including but not limited to curriculum development, professional development, and collaboration with internal and external partners.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Current Iowa Department of Education standard teaching license preferred.
- Experience teaching Adult Education and Literacy, including ESL or high school equivalency diploma preparation preferred.
- Ability to use technology and computer software applications to perform work duties.
- Demonstrated understanding, ability, and appreciation for working with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong human relations and interpersonal oral and written communication skills to interact positively with diverse personalities and populations.
- Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and perform with a high level of personal and professional integrity.
- Self-motivated, creative, and capable of being flexible in the delivery of program services.
