Position Description:
This position is with a utility that operates several water supply and distribution systems whose source of supply, primarily, are wells. This is an entry level position. In addition to the expeditious acquisition of skills specific to this position, the incumbent should possess the following characteristics: reliability, initiative, adaptability, and an ability to pleasantly communicate with customers.
Qualifications:
Education and Training: high school graduate, with some specialized training in mechanical trades. Prior water works experience is desirable.
Other: Must reside, within six months of employment, within Southeastern Connecticut. Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid Connecticut driver’s license. This position includes a company vehicle for work-related travel, which will be taken home for convenience. Must accept and faithfully discharge on-call responsibilities. Arduous physical labor under adverse climatic conditions may be required. Must be able to walk/stand for several consecutive hours. Must be in good health and able to bend, stoop, lift and conduct other physical activities. Must maintain medical clearance to wear an air-purifying respirator. There is a six month introductory probationary period.
Specific Job Skills and Areas of Responsibility:
Water Utility Operator will be trained, and become proficient at the following:
Basic characteristics of wells - take draw down measurements, assist in well maintenance.
Operation and maintenance of pumps, storage and transfer equipment, specific piping and valve arrangements and associated electrical equipment.
Water treatment systems, operation and routine maintenance of chemical feed pumps; mixing of chemicals, collecting of water samples.
Water distribution systems, repair, inspection and operation of water mains, service lines, etc.

Training/Certification:
Employee will be required to obtain necessary Department of Public Health (DPH) certifications, as a Water Treatment Plant Operator and a Distribution System Operator, subject to DPH qualifications and examination. Employee will be required to successfully complete such courses of instruction as may be convened by the State of Connecticut, the American Water Works Association or other suitable entity. SCWA will pay for classes, some of which may be scheduled in the evening. Transportation and other costs will be paid by SCWA. Wages are not paid for time spent in evening classes.
