Overview
This position is a COMCorps Americorps position and includes an education stipend at the end of the service year to help pay for college or post-secondary education.
SOCIL believes that people with disabilities have the right to choices and opportunities in society that support and maximize their empowerment, inclusion, leadership, independence and full participation in community life. We are a non-profit, non-residential organization assisting people of all ages with all types of disabilities. Our unique core foundation is based around peer relationships - people with disabilities assisting other people with disabilities as role models and mentors.
This position involves developing and implementing wellness programs with our Adaptive Sports and Wellness Specialist, providing support to clients, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance the quality of life for participants. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills and a passion for helping others achieve their wellness goals.
Duties
· 20% COMCorps sponsored events, trainings, meetings, and initiatives.
· 30% Health and Wellness Initiatives, including:
o Assist with Adaptive Sports such as badminton, wheelchair basketball, boccia, and cornhole, based on the Paralympic Model
o Support Accessible Hiking and Recreation Initiative, teaching and learning about nature
o Coordinate and Plan Accessible Swimming
o Support people with disabilities to develop and achieve health goals
o Recruit additional volunteers to support consumers
· 30% Independent Skills Training, including
o Set goals with consumers around independent living skills such as cooking, budgeting, job interviewing, and managing staff and support them in achieving their goals
o Teach classes around independent living skills with partner agencies
· 20% Systems and Individual Advocacy
o Support people with disabilities in learning to advocate for themselves
o Form peer mentor advocacy groups to make change on a systems level
Skills
- Experience in wellness activities a plus, with an interest in outdoors, adaptive sports, and a willingness to learn
- Knowledge of working with individuals with disabilities and/or personal experience
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with clients, families, and team members.
- Valid driver's license is required for travel between locations as needed.
