Basic Function:
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Leader of Occupational Therapy, the Occupational Therapist evaluates and treats patients in a manner that reflects the philosophical base and standards of practice (AOTA, 1998) of occupational therapy. The nature and scope of occupational therapy services must be in accordance with laws and rules pertaining to occupational therapy in the state of Ohio and must comply with the policies and procedures of SEORMC.
Essential Functions:
- Performs initial evaluation on all patients. The evaluation process shall include a review of the patient’s relative medical history as well as tests and measurements to determine the patient’s specific care needs. From this list of needs and in conjunction with the physician, patient and the patient’s family members, the therapist develops a set of therapeutic goals to be achieved through the rehabilitation process to restore or improve daily functions.
- Develops for each patient a comprehensive plan of care with specific treatments outlined to aid the patient in achieving his/her rehabilitation goals.
- Evaluates the patient’s response to treatment and modifies the plan of care and goals accordingly.
- Uses discretion to appropriately delegate components of the care plan to appropriate support personnel, including when applicable, students on clinical assignment. The therapist will not delegate any treatments that require the skill and knowledge of the Occupational Therapist to be safely and effectively performed.
- Complies with departmental policies pertaining to the documentation and billing of patient care, including but not limited to prompt communications with the referring physician.
- Arranges for the continued provision of occupational therapy services in the appropriate setting when necessary. Assists in the transition of services from one environment to next.
- Assures continued competency by establishing, maintaining and updating professional performance knowledge and skills.
- The Occupational Therapist shall be knowledgeable in the performance of all modalities in the Occupational Therapy Department (as listed in the orientation checklist).
- The Staff Occupational Therapist is knowledgeable about AOTA’s Standards of Practice for Occupational Therapy, the Philosophical Base of Occupational Therapy, and other AOTA , state, and federal documents relevant to the practice of occupational therapy.
- Maintains current knowledge of legislative, political, social, cultural and reimbursement issues that affect clients and the practice of occupational therapy.
- Maintains current knowledge about research in the practitioner’s areas of practice. Applies timely research findings ethically and appropriately to evaluation and intervention processes and educates COTAs as appropriate.
- Instruct patients on posture, body mechanics and bed positioning.
- Discusses home care preparations and programs with the patient and/or family, distributing written instructions. Instructs other health care team personnel who may be involved with the patient.
- Assists with administrative duties for the OT Department.
- Participates in CQI activities for the OT Department.
- The Occupational Therapist shall measure, fabricate or order, and fit patients with various types of splints, braces or supports. The OT will provide instruction on brace application and removal, as well as special care instructions.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation with a BS degree in Occupational Therapy from an AOTA accredited Occupational Therapy Program at an accredited and approved college or university.
- Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the State of Ohio
- Certification through the National Board of Certification for Occupational Therapy.
