What are the responsibilities and job description for the Certified Coding Specialist position at SOUTHEASTERN RETINA ASSOCIATES PC?
POSITION SUMMARY
Assist with the revenue cycle management of SERA’s Billing Department with a primary focus on ensuring physician charges and injectable drug charges are accurately coded as required by current coding standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Enter charges daily for all physicians ensuring accurate coding.
- Ensure prior day’s charges have been accurately prepared and ready to bill insurance in a timely manner.
- Verification of correct injectable drug charges using PODIS – reporting any discrepancies to Billing Manager in a timely manner.
- Edit previously submitted charges as needed due to identified billing errors and/or insurance requirement changes.
- Maintain copy of fee slips on shared drive.
- Verification of correct insurance policy loaded in PMS and bill according to carrier policy requirements.
- Maintain ‘Missed Visit’ report monthly to ensure all charges are entered.
- Maintain current Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) Certification through AAPC.
- Answer incoming calls from front desk staff and clinical staff as needed assisting in what may be necessary to satisfactory resolution of the issue.
- Assist AR with coding denials.
- Processing over the phone patient credit card payments.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Ability to keep pace with a high volume of patients while performing multiple, sometimes complex tasks.
- Requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, staff and other people contacted in the course of the work.

- High school diploma or equivalent Required
- Two years’ experience in a medical office with knowledge of medical reimbursement and coding. Preferred
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) Certification Required

Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, operates a calculator, telephone, copier and other office equipment as necessary. It is necessary to view and type on computer screens for long periods.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office environment. Work involves frequent contact with staff members and physicians.
Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
