Job Summary

The Sports Media Program in the Department of Communication, Arts, and Design at Southeastern University is seeking qualified candidates for on-site adjunct faculty positions. This posting is for a pool of adjunct professors who may be assigned to teach undergraduate courses on our main campus in Lakeland, Florida, as needs arise. Courses are scheduled on a semester-by-semester basis and cover a range of topics within the sports media industry.

Essential Job Tasks:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in the Sports Media program.
  • Create an engaging, learning-centered classroom environment.
  • Incorporate real-world industry experience and case studies into the curriculum.
  • Uphold and model the universitys Christian mission and values in the classroom.
  • Provide regular feedback, mentorship, and support to students.
  • Utilize the syllabi, assignments, and projects in accordance with university guidelines.
  • Be available for student consultations as needed.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Knowledge

  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Academic Processes - Knowledge of university guidelines, course descriptions, and academic terminology.
  • Clerical - Knowledge of office administrative procedures including word processing, managing files and records, typing, and other office procedures.
  • Computer - Knowledge of basic computer processes including word processing, web browsing, Google enterprise software (Google docs, Google sheets, etc.), and Microsoft Office including Basic Microsoft Excel.

Skills

  • Critical Thinking - Uses logic and reasoning to look at different types of information in order to make conclusions and work through problems.
  • Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.
  • Research - Locates key facts and information in order to learn more about different types of information.

  • Time Management - Manages ones own time to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Attention to Detail - Thoroughness and accuracy when accomplishing a task ensuring all aspects are reviewed.

  • Mathematics - Knowledge of basic mathematics.

Education and/or Experience

Adjunct Instructors Teaching Undergraduate and/or Certificate Courses must:

  • Possess a terminal degree or Masters degree in Communication, Journalism, or in a closely related discipline from an accredited program/college/university or...
  • Possess the highest degree in the teaching discipline/field with a certification or license and a minimum of two years experience in the teaching discipline/field
  • Possess experience teaching at the college/university level (preferred)
  • Demonstrated professional experience in the Sports Media industry.
  • Skilled in print, digital, and broadcast communication.
  • Ability to integrate faith into teaching and discussions, supporting the Christian worldview of the University.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to academic excellence and the development of students as future leaders in the Sports Media field.

Preferred:

Prior teaching experience in a higher education setting.
Familiarity with active learning strategies and experiential learning.

Equipment Required

Adjunct instructors are required to provide their own equipment if teaching online. This includes:

  • Computer, telephone, and a printer with a scanner that would meet the technical requirements for the universitys software and programs.
  • Secure and reliable internet access with sufficient speed/bandwidth to perform job responsibilities is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

All employees are responsible for maintaining an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, harassment, including sexual harassment.

  • This position is considered non-essential for the purposes of Emergency Response.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to sit, stand and operate a computer for extended periods of time.

Schedule

Adjunct hours (part time) are specific to the courses assigned by semester. Adjuncts are considered temporary, term-to-term employees with no guarantee of assigned work each semester.


TRAINING

All new hires and employees transferring into a new position will have a 90-day probationary period within which to learn the functions of the job and to be evaluated. Following the probationary period, the employee can transition to regular status, have the probationary period extended in order to receive more training, or employment can be terminated. Required compliance training is as follows:

In house training for MyFire and other internal systems

FERPA training may be required

SAFETY

  • SEU promotes a safe working environment. Employees are responsible for completing assigned tasks safely and efficiently, and supervisors are responsible for creating and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Employees must report any unsafe work conditions or practices, as well as any near-miss incidents, to their supervisor and Risk Management.
  • Work-related injuries must be immediately reported to Security and Human Resources. When life or limb are at risk, please dial 911. Supervisors and employees should ensure that injury/accident reports are submitted to the Office of Human Resources within 24 hours of the incident.
  • Emergency Employees report for or must remain at work in emergency situations. Dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to this position, unless instructed otherwise by your direct supervisor or a member of the Leadership Team.

SCREENING

All full-time and instructional positions at SEU are deemed security-sensitive and require background checks. Employees required to drive their own personal vehicle, a rental car or an SEU vehicle in performance of their duties must pass an MVR records check and meet the requirements of the Universitys insurance carrier in order to meet the requirements of the position.
