JOB SUMMARY

The Head Coach will be responsible for coaching and mentoring the team in a manner that is consistent with goals of the program and the policies and procedures of Southeastern University. The Head Coach will supervise assistant coach(es) of the sport, have recruiting responsibilities, be able to work collaboratively with the Athletic Director and other coaches, and perform other duties as assigned.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Athletic Director

Supervisory Responsibility: Assistant Coach, Graduate Assistant

Indirect Supervisory Responsibility: None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but is not limited to the following:

1. Oversee and execute the responsibilities of a head coach of a sport at SEU

2. Attend all practices, games, and recruiting functions

3. Plan and execute daily meeting and practice activities

4. Actively recruit prospective student-athletes to SEU

5. Support the Christian mission of SEU

6. Adhere to all applicable NAIA, Sun Conference, and institutional rules

ADDITIONAL/NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

All remaining duties are considered "nonessential" within the context of the ADA, which means that the function could be reassigned to another employee in order to allow a disabled individual to hold the position. Alternatively, the manager could try to provide a reasonable accommodation so that the disabled individual could perform the function.

EDUCATION

Required Education:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Education:

Bachelors degree in a sports-related discipline or a master's degree.


LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

N/A


EXPERIENCE

Required:

3-5 years of previous coaching experience in the sport

Preferred:

3-5 years previous head coaching experience at the college level in the sport

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required:

1. Must have and exhibit evidence of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

2. Excellence in Leadership develop and communicate a strong vision for the program and implements that vision. This encompasses self-leadership in that the coach is continuing to sharpen themselves while leading the program.

3. Character and Culture Development invest in producing men and women of character by mentoring, discipling, and promoting personal growth spiritually, socially, and relationally, amongst others. Build a team culture where student-athletes feel and are safe and are treated with respect.

4. Academic Excellence set and maintain high expectations for team and individual GPA, retention, and graduation; including the implementation of academic support for student-athletes who may struggle in the classroom.

5. Competitiveness demonstrate improving and sustained competitive excellence within the Sun Conference and the NAIA.

6. Team Player demonstrates emotional intelligence and the ability to cooperate, work, and communicate clearly and honestly with administration, co-workers, subordinates, and/or outside contacts at a high level while maintaining a positive and coachable attitude, even when things aren't going your way.

7. Budget Oversight manage the program budget and stay within the limits set for the team at the beginning of the fiscal year, both operationally and in the awarding of scholarships.

8. Conduct of the Team set and maintains high expectations for team conduct in the residence halls, off campus, during team travel, and competition and have the team subscribe to those expectations.

9. Recruiting recruit mission-fit student-athletes who compete at a high level and display a history of academic success. Student-athletes need not be Christians, but team culture should offer accountability for all with the expectation that a student-athletes will have an encounter with Jesus during their time at SEU.

10. Professionalism exhibit professional behavior during practice and competition, including but not limited to; attention to department, conference, NAIA and other deadlines, good communication, and regular attendance while adhering to athletic department policy.

11. Fundraising raise funds in support of their program, when necessary.

12. Compliance familiarity and compliance with the bylaws of the NAIA and The Sun Conference.

13. Professional Development seek opportunities to enhance their knowledge of the game by way of attendance at coaches clinics and seeking out other professional development opportunities.

14. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned, including but not limited to, supervision of assistant coaches and graduate assistants, attendance at all staff meetings, service on department committee assignments, special projects, etc.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Requirements:

Standing for long periods of time and occasional lifting and moving of objects may be required

Travel:

Yes 50% or so during season, 25% or so out of season

Schedule:

40-60 hours in-season, 40 hours out of season


TRAINING

All new hires and employees transferring into a new position will have a 90-day probationary period within which to learn the functions of the job and to be evaluated. Following the probationary period, the employee can transition to regular status, have the probationary period extended in order to receive more training, or employment can be terminated. Required compliance training is as follows:

SAFETY

  • SEU promotes a safe working environment. Employees are responsible for completing assigned tasks safely and efficiently, and supervisors are responsible for creating and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Employees must report any unsafe work conditions or practices, as well as any near-miss incidents, to their supervisor and Risk Management.
  • Work-related injuries must be immediately reported to Security and Human Resources. When life or limb are at risk, please dial 911. Supervisors and employees should ensure that injury/accident reports are submitted to the Office of Human Resources within 24 hours of the incident.
  • Emergency Employees report for or must remain at work in emergency situations. Dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to this position, unless instructed otherwise by your direct supervisor or a member of the Leadership Team.


SCREENING

All full-time positions at SEU are deemed security-sensitive and require background checks. Employees required to drive their own personal vehicle, a rental car or an SEU vehicle in performance of their duties must pass an MVR records check and meet the requirements of the Universitys insurance carrier in order to meet the requirements of the position.
