Surgery Scheduler -RN
Department: Southeastern Surgery Center
Reports To: Director of Nursing
Supervises: None
Overtime Status: Non-Exempt
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Position requires utilization of advanced clinical knowledge to schedule appropriate procedures/ surgeries per provider's orders. The Surgical Scheduler -RN must schedule outpatient and imaging procedures consistent with the patient's diagnosis and procedure request and complete pre-Âanesthesia assessments. The position requires excellent customer service skills with patients, team members, and the public. The Surgical Scheduler -RN must be able to respond to both written and oral correspondence regarding scheduling changes/cancellations in a timely, accurate manner. Individual must be organized, and be able to manage demanding workload with accuracy.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
Schedules Surgery Center surgical procedures for patients with appropriate provider and time/location slot, utilizing appropriate scheduling code.
Conducts pre-anesthesia assessments where warranted.
Schedules Surgery Center medical procedures, tests and imaging ensuring available time is utilized to maximum efficiency.
Interfaces with appropriate vendor staff to ensure all necessary equipment will be on site for Surgery Center procedures ie: prosthetics etc.
Interfaces with appropriate surgery center staff to ensure a cohesive working relationship in providing patient care services.
Enters notes/special instructions needed for scheduling in the electronic medical record.
Effectively utilizes advanced clinical knowledge when determining if appointment is consistent with the diagnosis/indications indicated by the provider.
Completes accurate documentation of informed consent with patients for procedures and surgeries as needed.
Provides accurate, detailed information to patients regarding test preparations, time of patients scheduled arrival, and any other directional information needed; takes appropriate action in responding to questions from patients.
Confirms patient's insurance provider and either obtains prior authorization or communicates need for prior authorization to appropriate parties as needed.
Ensures patients have proper medical clearance and pre-surgical testing as needed.
Completes pre-procedure phone calls and confirms appointment times with patients via telephone.
Ensures completion of assessment for advance directive, including DNR when applicable.
Ensures proper follow-up appointments are scheduled at the time the procedure is scheduled.
Assists other members of the department as needed.
Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
Participates in educational activities.
Maintains patient confidentiality.
Acts as team player: collaborate, communicate clearly, and cooperate with AUI and SSC team members with focus on mission and goals of SSC.
Enhances communications by consistently displaying excellent customer service skills in behavior and attitude.
Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS &ABILITIES:
Knowledge of medical terminology and coding
Accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation necessary.
Word processing and computer literacy required.
In-depth knowledge of customer service principles and a high consistency in the demonstration of such knowledge in all communications and behavior.
Skills:
Excellent communication skills required.
Excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
Must work well under pressure and deal with other team members and patients in a courteous and cooperative manner.
Ability to make decisions based on situation review and data compiled.
A self-starter, working quickly and efficiently with varying workloads and interruptions.
Current Registered Nursing License
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:EXPERIENCE:
Prefer at least 2 years surgical, OR, Med-Surg or ICU experience
