The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is seeking a skilled content creator and strategic communicator to temporarily fill the role of Senior Public Affairs Specialist in the Media and Public Affairs Department. The Senior Public Affairs Specialist will lead content creation and review, editorial planning and coordination, and regular publishingon owned channels to ensure clearand consistent information across SCAG’s platforms.


SCAG’s Media and Public Affairs Department deploys strategic communications to further agency priorities and foster an understanding of long-range regional planning. The department aims to produce clear and consistent media and information that exemplify agency values and standards and enhance SCAG’s reputationas a respected and influential voice for the region by increasing awareness of the agency’s work and purpose.


This is a temporary assignment limited to 29 hours per week, with an estimated duration of approximately three months.

As part of our Work@SCAGpolicy, employees are eligible for two work models: in-office and hybrid. Eligibility for these models will depend on the department, position, responsibilities, and duties, as determined by management. All work models require employees to be based within the SCAG region. This position is expected to follow the hybrid model and be in the office days per week.

  • Write, format, and publish content for outbound emails, newsletters, website updates, and social media channels.

  • Lead editorial planning and execution, maintaining the agency’s content calendar, overseeing publication schedules, and ensuring timely updates for key deliverables such as the weekly newsletter, monthly Executive Director (ED) report, andtalking points for executive speaking engagements.

  • Optimize communication workflows by configuring channels, incorporating insights, and improving content strategy.

  • Work with external vendors and collaborate with internal teams to align content development and publishing with agency goals.

  • Attend team meetings for production updates and coordinate messaging efforts across departments.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be with 5 years of experience in a support role, especially in a political setting, and a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.


Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may also be considered.


We’ll be a great match if you also have

  • Experience developing and overseeing communication and marketing materials in written, visual and multi-media formats.

  • Strong writing and editing skills, including the ability to write clearly and concisely.

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective cross-functional working relationships.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, attention to detail and a solutions-oriented?mindset.

  • The ability to oversee multiple projects and track with multiple deadlines.

  • The ability to be successful while working both independently and as part of a teamand exercise sound judgment when needed.

  • The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while remaining adaptable and responsive to changing priorities

Salary : $100,000 - $135,000
