APPRENTICE LINEMAN FOR TRANSMISSION LINE CONSTRUCTION
Description
Georgia Power is seeking experienced Apprentice Lineman candidates for statewide employment in Transmission construction. This position requires prior transmission line work experience and basic knowledge of wire pulling equipment and procedures. The Apprentice lineman will also be required to pass a pre- employment evaluation and demonstrate that he/she possesses the common skills, knowledge, and physical ability required to be successful in this position. This job requires weekly travel, and all travel expenses and hotel cost are the responsibility of the employee and a daily per diem (allowance) will be provided to help cover these costs. The current rate is $140 a day for those employees accruing overnight lodging and working 50 miles from their home. This is an item covered by the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No. 84.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Candidates who have earned the ELAC (Electrical Line Worker Apprentice Certification) through a technical college is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in Transmission is required with minimum one year as an apprentice lineman.
- Previous experience working on Georgia Power’s system is preferred but not required.
- Transmission construction and maintenance line work is desirable.
- Familiar with heavy equipment directly related to the line (including bucket truck and pulling equipment)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Pole climbing and aerial lift operations up to but not limited to 200 feet
- Working in overhead positions while on the pole - Basic mechanical aptitude
- Knowledge of hand tool required for daily tasks
- Experience using hydraulic and battery tools - Ability to take work direction and translate that into action in a team environment
Other Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must currently have an unrestricted Class A commercial driver’s license or permit or be able to obtain prior to first day of employment.
- Must pass a pre- employment CAST test (basic mechanical aptitude) and physical abilities test. Pre-employment testing may be required depending on level of related work experience. A thorough background check, drug screen, DOT physical and workers compensation questionnaire will be required prior to employment.
- Candidates must be able to work in all weather conditions throughout the year that may include heat, rain, ice, and snow.

- Able to work assigned storm duties, which may include nighttime, weekend, holidays, and overnight travels
- Because of the nature of the work and weight restrictions on our equipment a candidate must currently weight (and maintain their body weight) below 300lb. fully dressed including steel-toed boots and hard hat
Additional Information
- This position is covered under the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No. 84 which includes an increase every six month until you max out in your job classification and a cost-of-living increase annually. This position is subject to call-out overtime work, scheduled overtime work, and storm restoration response.
- Pay: This is a position covered by the collective bargaining agreement between GPC and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay for ALL NEW HIRES is $5974.00 /month or approximately $34.47 /hour. Apprentice lineman who receives job offers will be hired at this rate, regardless of experience/skills. This rate is non-negotiable.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This position will require a written aptitude test and for candidates undergoing further consideration, a physical abilities test, an interview, and a DOT Physical as part of the selection process. These events will require you to travel to a designated location, most likely Atlanta.
