What are the responsibilities and job description for the Forecasting Analyst position at Southern Company?
This position supports the development, maintenance, production, and analysis of the long-term customer and energy sales forecasts. The successful candidate must have the ability to work as an integral part of a collaborative technical team. The team is currently hybrid, which means they are working both from home and from the corporate headquarter of Alabama Power Company.
Summary of Job Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain and optimize analytical models and tools as needed to provide the best monthly forecasts for number of customers, electricity consumption, and peak demand required for the Retail and specific territorial wholesale customers.
- Develop, maintain and improve models to forecast monthly revenue projections by retail class.
- Provide analytical support for a variety of projects impacting load forecast including the impact of weather, appliance efficiency improvements, behind the meter solar adoption, plug in electric vehicles, etc.
- Collect and maintain historical data from a variety of in-house databases using SAS or other database reporting tools.
- Provide variance reporting for the actual and weather normal class level sales and base rate revenues so that budget performance and growth rates can be determined.

Educational Background: 4-year college degree in technical or business discipline is required. Graduate Degree would be preferred. Majors that could prove most valuable include:
- Economics/Statics/Mathematics
- Engineering (Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, Mechanical, Computer, Software)
- Computer Science
Job Experience: Experience in predictive utility load forecasting modeling (econometric modeling, time series modeling as well as other ARIMA regression techniques), statistical methods, electric utility planning, customer load research, utility accounting or similar experience is a plus, but is not required.
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated analytical abilities and problem-solving skills
- Excellent abilities in the use of computers and computer software applications - particularly in the use of Excel, SAS and PowerPoint
- Develop, maintain and search databases
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong listening, written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with company leadership and other diverse audiences
- High level of initiative, thoroughness, and quality focus while working with multiple priorities.
