Inventory Accountant - Materials Accounting
Job Summary
Southern Company Services (SCS) currently has a position available in our Accounting department located at our corporate office in Birmingham, AL. This position will be responsible for executing the annual inventory audit program of the Southern Company electric operating companies, SCS, SNC and SPC. Inventory audits consist of inventory counts, reporting variances, understanding storeroom functions, communicating variances to storeroom, and accounting management.
Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or business-related field required
- Must have 6 months of professional experience
- Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal skills, evidenced by the ability to collaborate effectively with individuals at all organizational levels, across various departments, and spanning multiple geographic locations of the company
- Must be able to operate storeroom machinery.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Perform storeroom physical inventory counts to confirm accuracy of material within Maximo
- Record physical count results within Maximo or EZMax Mobile
- Report physical inventory count results to storeroom personal, storeroom management and accounting management
- Ensure accounting impact of inventory related transactions is appropriate
- Perform accounting tasks in compliance with GAAP and Sarbanes/Oxley requirements
- Support Supply Chain and Plant personnel as needed with accounting inquiries
Experience, Knowledge, & Skills
- Knowledge and/or experience of storeroom operations
- Knowledge of Maximo preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, employing an array of functions to streamline processes and enhance operational efficiencies
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build working relationships with internal business partners
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Ability to communicate with all levels of management
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent commitment to accuracy and details
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to self-direct and manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley compliance requirements
- Ability to identify and implement process improvements
- Understanding of GAAP, FERC, SEC and other applicable rules, regulations, and reporting requirements, as well as Southern Company policies and guidelines
Other Requirements:
- Must live or be willing to relocate to Central Alabama – Birmingham to Montgomery areas.
- No relocation will be offered
- Travel - 80% of time will be spent within storerooms/in-transit to storerooms
- Overnight travel due to length of storeroom audits
- Flexibility due to unforeseen changes (examples: weather, scheduling changes)
- Extended hours and weekend work as required
