Job Summary
This is an exciting time to join the Southern Power Company (SPC) transmission team as we support the growth of SPC's generation fleet to build the future of energy across the country. Southern Power Company's transmission team manages interconnection and delivery risks related to acquiring, developing, owning, and operating generation assets. Responsibilities of the transmission team include developing and executing strategies for securing and maintaining long-term deliverability from generation assets, conducting due diligence of transmission-related issues for asset acquisitions, developing transmission deliverability and cost assessments for new generation construction, managing the generator interconnection process for new assets, and managing the customer interface with transmission providers. The SPC Transmission team also supports our existing generation fleet with operations and maintenance activities, participating in transmission policy, forecasting transmission congestion and curtailment to provide inputs to other SPC teams.
The engineer/analyst role will support project managers on the transmission team who provide leadership in areas of optimization and hedging, acquisition and development due diligence, O&M support, generator interconnections and transmission/market policy. This role will perform transmission analysis and risk evaluations for securing and maintaining long-term deliverability from Southern Power's generation assets.
This position works closely with various organizations, so the successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate concepts clearly and concisely with diverse audiences. They will also have the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of different wholesale electric market structures while gaining insight into acquiring and developing new generation assets.

Major Job Responsibilities Include:
- Transmission grid analysis and nodal modeling to produce forecasts of market prices as well as other ad hoc analysis in support of the Commercial Optimization, Trading and Transmission organization
- Provide analysis and communicate with SPC traders to procure congestion hedging positions and analyze pricing of long-term transmission congestions products. Identify, track, analyze and communicate key grid outages or other grid conditions that could impact SPC'S generation fleet
- Asset acquisition and development due diligence - Review of interconnection agreements, transmission service, power purchase agreements, FERC and transmission provider requirements, curtailment, and congestion forecasts to identify key risks (such as cost, schedule, contractual)
- Work closely with the following teams: Business Development, Project Development, Commercial Optimization, Trading and Transmission to develop potential risk mitigations and solutions
- O&M Support: Provide operational support to Southern Power's Remote Operations Center, O&M support team and plant personnel. Provide technical analysis and support for SPC's generating fleet.
Candidates with the following preferred qualifications are encouraged to apply:
Education
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related analytical field is required
- An MBA or advanced degree in these areas or related field is desired but not required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Transmission experience is desired
- High level of proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office products is required
- Strong analytical skills, interpersonal skills, verbal/written communications skills
- The ability to successfully manage numerous tasks and priorities to support various SPC organizations
- Creative thinking with a focus on finding optimal solutions to issues across energy markets
- Knowledge of nodal energy markets is desired
- Experience with modeling related to one of the following is beneficial: load flow or production cost and dispatch
- Experience with power purchase agreement interpretations, real-time operations, or renewable generation technologies is desired
- Knowledge of FERC policies of wholesale power markets is desired
