What are the responsibilities and job description for the Local Haul Driver position at Southern Concrete Materials?
· Must be a Qualified CDL (Commercial Driver’s License, A) Driver with Large Truck Driving Experience and comply with all applicable DOT regulations.
· Must be knowledgeable in all phases of Tractor Trailer Truck Operations to include checking to insure loads meet all state weight standards. This function requires that all drivers be able to climb the rear truck ladders, bend over and view the under bed of the truck and truck tires and be able to perform routine maintenance and safety checks on the tractor trailer truck.
· Must be able to pass a DOT Physical and be in good physical and muscular shape without major back, arm, leg or body pain, or injuries or physical limitations that could prevent handling a large truck requiring good muscular dexterity.
· Must be able to crawl under a Truck to check possible problem areas and bring such problems to a shop technician or to the dispatcher for resolution.
· Must be able to communicate over the Mobile Communications System with clear voice and without voice stutter since the two way “Radio/Mobile Phone” is often the only means of communication.
· Must be able to think fast on their feet and handle customer and/or plant situations with tact and diplomacy when caught in stressful situations.
· Must be able to professionally operate the vehicle, and equipment and perform all tasks in a safe manner to include maintaining fuel and water at proper levels. This includes being able to maneuver the truck into and out of particularly tight places and/ or over uneven terrain.
· Must be knowledgeable in the “Basics” of truckloads available and be able to talk to plant managers about same.
· Must be able to work as part of a unique team of highly experienced Tractor Trailer Truck Operators responsible for the production and delivery of ready mixed concrete. This includes being able to follow instructions given by dispatchers and/ or other supervisors and managers and properly fill out and return all required paperwork.
· Must maintain driving record and log books and/or E-logs in accordance with Federal and State motor carrier regulations and company policy and maintain the truck to include cleaning the truck, and all associated elements.
· Must be able to load and unload various load ingredients to concrete Plant silos such as cement, and Fly Ash.
· Must be able to meet the strenuous requirements of a tractor Trailer Driver inside cab and OUTDOORS, which can include climbing in and out of the relatively high cab over 50 times a day. Weather conditions with high or low temperatures, moisture, and or snow. Must be able to reach the pedals, adjust the seat within its normal range of motion and climb all over the truck as required to perform the functions of driver, delivery expert, and assistant at Plant and Quarry sites. This includes being able to perform the following actions on a routine basis:
o Press in the clutch repeatedly, which can require 60 lbs. of pressure each time.
o Operate all the gears and controls on a complex tractor-trailer truck, which can weigh upwards of 80,000 pounds when filled with materials.
o Climb ladders routinely and be able to check the interior of the trailer as necessary.
o Operate all the assorted heavy equipment on the truck, which can routinely weigh more than 40 pounds each time it is lifted or moved. (straps, blocks, chocks, secure bars, and ladders)
o Clean the entire truck using provided mixtures, water, soap, brushes, and power equipment when necessary.
o Perform all functions in adverse weather conditions when required, (heat, cold, rain, sleet and snow), and at various sites where noise, dust, poor roads and difficult entry and exit conditions often exist.
o Be able to withstand normal truck vibration, loud noise and other aggravating conditions in and around heavy construction sites.
o Wear protective clothing and equipment as necessary to include hearing protection, dust masks, safety glasses, boots, harnesses and other clothing as required.
o Work professionally around caustic substances such as cement, lime, admixtures, dust and fuels which can cause burns and irritants when not used carefully.
o Work around other physical hazards in which there can be a very real danger of injury if you are not awake and mentally alert. Proximity to moving mechanical parts, fall hazards, various environmental conditions, moving equipment, and other hazards associated with the construction industry.
· Must be able to read, write and converse in English.

· Be able to pass a DOT physical as required.
· Must be able to walk the plant grounds frequently to inspect trucks, pickup tickets, or coordinate with Dispatchers.
