Position Summary

• The Department of Surgery Oncology is excited to announce the opening for a

Nurse Practitioner - Specialty Care or Physician Assistant - Specialty Care.
• We are seeking an Advance Practice Provider (PA or NP) to support and help
grow our Surgical Oncology practice specializing in Gastrointestinal cancers
(Esophageal, Gastric, Pancreas, Colon, Hepatobiliary, Melanoma, Sarcoma and
HIPEC) This is a great opportunity to enhance your specialty skills working
alongside a busy Surgical Oncologist who enjoys mentoring and teaching. Our
practice works as a team in a collegial multidisciplinary atmosphere to provide
the highest level of care to our cancer patients in their time of greatest need.
• This individual will act as a physician extender within Surgical Oncology. The
ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of autonomy and expert skills in
the diagnosis and treatment of actual and potential health problems.

Education

• Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from a CAHEA accredited program
• Master’s Degree in Advanced Practice Nursing Studies from a CCNEA accredited program.

Licenses and Certification

• Current Illinois Licensed Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Nurse

• Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Nurse practitioner-controlled substance licensure.

Experience

• Technical Experience: 3 years

• Clinical responsibilities will be a combination of outpatient and
inpatient care of patients.

• Inpatient: The APP is responsible for rounding on patients

in the acute post operative phase who are admitted to the
hospital after surgery. Post operative wound care, pain
management, timely collaboration with consulting
physicians, coordinating discharge from the hospital as well
as evaluation of new consults is expected. Orders and
interprets appropriate diagnostic tests. Strong collaboration
with the attending Surgical Oncologist is expected in the
daily plan of care for the inpatients.

• Outpatient: Evaluation of new consults in clinic, seeing

post-operative patients, continued follow up surveillance of
cancer patient as deemed necessary by the surgeon,
reviewing treatment plans, ordering therapies,
communication among medical teams, and completing
documentation. Perform physical examinations, order
diagnostic tests and assist with minor procedures in clinic.
Obtain and document a focused history and physical,
relating other aspects of a patient’s medical information to
their surgical care. This role will include evaluation of new
patient consultations and triage of urgent established
patients. The candidate will assist in peri-operative
evaluations.

• Excellent care documentation is an expectation of the

candidate.

• Coordination of care with nurse navigator in surgical

oncology will be an important aspect of daily duties. The
candidate will assist with the development of enhanced
recovery pathways in surgical oncology, as well as
contribute to the value of care provided by the surgical
oncology surgery team.
