Description
University Housing at Southern Illinois University Carbondale announces openings for the position of Hall Director. These are full-time, 12-month, live-in professional positions. Application review will begin after February 14th, 2025, with applications accepted through April 30th, 2025, or until the positions are filled.
The target salary offer for this position is $3,250.00 - $3,416.66 monthly. Final salary offer will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints.
Examples of Duties
The Hall Director is responsible for the quality of student life in residential facilities ranging from traditional residence halls to an apartment complex. The Hall Director hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates a staff team ranging from 6-16 Resident Assistants and potential supervision of a Civil Service Staff member. The Hall Director is a member of a dynamic team consisting of Hall Directors, Program Managers, Assistant Directors, Associate Directors and the Director of University Housing and Residence Life.
- Select, train, supervise, and evaluate student staff members.
- Hold weekly (or biweekly) 1:1s meetings with Senior student staff members to discuss personal, community, and professional issues/concerns, as well as monitoring student wellbeing and development.
- Lead weekly staff meetings to discuss community and departmental issues/concerns.
- Support and attend events and activities planned by Student-led, departmental, or campus organizations.
- Establish, advise, and manage Area Council executive board for your residential area of responsibility.
- Advise and manage on-campus student leadership organizations such as National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH), Residence Hall Association (RHA), and the Black Togetherness Organization (BTO).
- Attend weekly area council meetings and leadership organizations executive board meetings.
- Work with student staff to develop and promote House (floor) based communities; Collaborate with students to create House (floor) based identities.
- Establish and recruit student leaders to serve on area-specific leadership council (Area Council).
- Plan and implement monthly, HD-led, area programming relating to Residence Life Curriculum.
- Promote and assist with the recruitment for student leadership organizations such as Area Council, NRHH, RHA, and BTO. · Collaborate with Faculty/Staff and Residence Life to promote and execute Living Learning Community (LLCs) events and programs.
- Adjudicate student conduct/administrative conferences with students using both conduct and report management system (Advocate).
- Serve in a campus on-call rotation.
- Utilize housing administrative software for on-campus occupancy management, room changes, and damages charges (StarRez).
- Manage operating budgets for student staff, student leadership organization, and Area Council programming.
- Establish both working relationships and lines of communication with Campus Partners such as Counseling and Psychological services (CAPS), Office for Access & Accommodations (OAA), and -Students Rights and Responsibilities (SRR).
- Chair/serve on departmental review/planning committees such as Hiring/recruitment, Training, Move-In. and Systems and Administration.
- Maintain a secure and functional physical environment conducive to students learning and success.
- Conduct frequent walk-through of assigned residential area.
- Establish working relationships with facilities and housekeeping/custodial staff.
- Report building/facility related emergencies/after-hour concerns and submit maintenance requests/reports.
- Utilize building access and camera system to ensure the security of on-campus living facilities.
- Assist with the implementation of summer camps/conference held within the residence halls.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required by date of hire.
- Minimum of one (1) academic year of graduate or professional experience or two (2) academic years of undergraduate pre-professional experience within housing or residence life.
- A commensurate amount of experience in supervising student staff, providing support to college students, developing and implementing educational models, or building community through programming on a college campus can be substituted for experience within residence life.
- Valid driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, or related field preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite and database software.
- University Counseling and/or Crisis Response experience.
- Experience with an on-call structure.
- Housing/Residence life live-on experience.
