The Office of Information Technology is focused on improving service delivery, fostering innovation, and ensuring operational effectiveness for its constituency. This position serves as a Network Engineering Team member. The Network Engineering Team, or NET, is a sub-unit of the Office of Information Technology. The NET consists of four fulltime team members, the Network Manager and approximately 15 student employees. NET is responsible for providing data network connectivity and tier 2 / 3 support on the SIU Carbondale campus, Internet and Internet II connectivity, residence hall networking, firewall & IPS support, campus Wi-Fi, campus DNS and DHCP services, NAC and more. This position will report to the Network Manager and will manage Graduate Assistants, Student Employees, and support all aspects of the SIU Carbondale campus area wired and wireless network to include the residence halls.

Examples of Duties
The following are performed under the general supervision of a designated supervisor (Network Manager).
- Regular Maintenance : Support of campus area network infrastructure to ensure appropriate levels of hardware and software. Networks supported may be for the campus or the residence halls. Supports product suites consisting of multiple products.
- Network Enhancements : Installs / tests hardware and software.
- Problem Resolution : Assists in troubleshooting. Assists campus personnel with problems / configuration with networking issues.
- Research the in support of the network infrastructure.
- Generates / investigates reports regarding network deficiencies.
- Assists with campus switch and wireless access point replacement projects as needed.
- Helps Implement / maintain firewall security on campus.
- Supervision of Student Employees. Assists student employees in troubleshooting reported issues. Trains students in general workplace issues, but also in technical aspects of the job. Makes work assignments based on workload and class schedule. This position is expected to mentor as much as supervise.
- Documentation : Develops / reviews documentation. Creates very detailed documentation concerning support of the above listed servers and cookbooks for bare-metal installations. Maintains a wide-variety of team documentation on Wiki server, to include technical and administrative topics.
- Knowledge Transfer : Provides training to student employees as appropriate.
- Respond to data infrastructure problems on a 24x7 basis (periodic "first-on-call" status).
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
College coursework which includes Information Systems Technologies (IST), Information Technology (IT), Computer Science (CS), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), or a closely related discipline, including coursework in security and / or networking, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent :
30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)

Illinois Residency Requirement : Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.
